The Carter Society The Carter Society seeks to honor those early Carters who came to the Virginia Colony and their famil

The following chapters have been established within the Society based upon those Carter patriots of Colonial Virginia who have known living descendants:
Giles Carter I of Henrico County
John Carter I of Lancaster County
Thomas Carter I of Lancaster County
Thomas Carter I of Isle of Wight County
William Carter of Surry

Incorporated as a non-profit heritage organization, the Carter Society offers

a unique opportunity to come to know those who share a common heritage, a common interest, and a common goal. The Carter Society is a corporation led by a Board of Directors who are elected at the annual meeting and serve for a term of two years, or until the next election. Officers are elected by the directors at the first meeting of the Board of Directors following the annual meeting, and serve concurrently with their directorship. The principal officers of the Society are the President, Secretary, and Treasurer, although the Board may also elect one or more Vice-Presidents, Assistant Secretaries, and Assistant Treasurers, as necessary. Committees may be appointed by the President, except the membership committee, which is elected by the Board.

A rainy day at Ashlawn, home of our 5th President, James Monroe, with excellent docent guided to share the story of the family and property. He purchased the property in 1793. He purchased about 1000 acres of land near Monticello from the John Carter I family. He sold the land in 1825.

Jimmy Carter, Bob Thompson and Bob Lumsden visited James Carter (1697-1743) of Stafford County’s cemetery this past April. The land is registered and protected. They worked with Cemetery Chair of the county, Anita Dodd, and the landowners who have taken great care of the site so far. There are seven other known Carters at this site, some without markers, but as many as 35 depressions of others buried. The society will address preservation of the cemetery and how members can support this endeavor.

She spoke about the languages, home life, religion, education and cultural traditions. We learned that Thomas Jefferson documented in an archaeological fashion a Monacan Indian burial ground.

Doug S Carter’s presentation about his family’s historical involvement during the Civil War in Kentucky started with a great video. He is a part of the Sons of Union Soldiers of the Civil War. His great, great uncle Thomas E Carter served under Grant, but had family members who fought on both sides. Tom died at age 55 in Centerville, KY. Shared with us a video recording filmed while he was at a Descendants of the Sultana meeting.

Our next venture was to Mayhurst Estate, currently owned by Casey and Jason Cashell since 2020. Colonel John Willis, great nephew of President James Madison built this home for his family of eight. During the Civil War, A.P. Hill set up an encampment here from 1863-1864. Stonewall Jackson stayed here. At one point it was Daniel’s Dairy. The Cashell’s have been restoring the property since 2020.

P.S. more photos to come!
