The Carter Society The Carter Society seeks to honor those early Carters who came to the Virginia Colony and their famil

The following chapters have been established within the Society based upon those Carter patriots of Colonial Virginia who have known living descendants:
Giles Carter I of Henrico County
John Carter I of Lancaster County
Thomas Carter I of Lancaster County
Thomas Carter I of Isle of Wight County
William Carter of Surry

Incorporated as a non-profit heritage organization, the Carter Society offers a unique opportunity to come to know those who share a common heritage, a common interest, and a common goal. The Carter Society is a corporation led by a Board of Directors who are elected at the annual meeting and serve for a term of two years, or until the next election. Officers are elected by the directors at the first meeting of the Board of Directors following the annual meeting, and serve concurrently with their directorship. The principal officers of the Society are the President, Secretary, and Treasurer, although the Board may also elect one or more Vice-Presidents, Assistant Secretaries, and Assistant Treasurers, as necessary. Committees may be appointed by the President, except the membership committee, which is elected by the Board.

The morning started with a glassblowing demonstration, followed by a self-guided tour of Jamestown settlement. A tremendous amount of work has been done in archaeology despite the harsh elements of the sea!

Our final stop of the day was Berkeley Plantation. Theodorick Bland of Westover sold the land to Benjamin Harrison III. His son built the Georgian style home for he and his wife, Sarah Ann Carter, who was the daughter of Robert “King” Carter in 1726. The first ten US Presidents have visited this property. Sorry no inside photography allowed, but the docents were very knowledgeable!

Thursday afternoon we received incredible two-hour tours from docents at The Mariners Museum. Robert “King” Carter would have farmed to***co crops along this Eastern shoreline along these waters battles of the American Revolution, 1812 and Civil War took place. It features donated historical boats, ships, miniature replica ships, maritime historical accessories, furniture, documents, photos, china…so amazing! The highlight was the documentation of how the USS Monitor came to be, replicas and real artifacts of what would have been inside, the parts of the ship that are ready for view and what is still in desalination to be seen in another 10 years.

First stop Thursday was to the historic Fort Monroe. Its place in history started in 1609 established as Fort Algernourne. After is fell out of use it became Fort George in 1727, but destroyed a hurricane in 1749. Most famously it served as Point Comfort for enslaved Africans in 1619 where they lived and helped build and staff the Fort. During the Civil War the enslaved took refuge here prior to Emancipation. Decommissioned in 2011, but is now a National Monument.
