For those curious how some consumer-level "AI Skin Cancer Screening" apps perform, here's a demo.
Just to be clear: the app shown is an unregulated, non–FDA-approved, consumer-facing app, the kind you might download from the App Store. It should not be taken as representative of the medical-grade AI platforms currently under FDA review (like DermEngine from MetaOptima Technology, which is amazing).
Amelanotic melanoma is obviously tricky, but to miss two blatant (pigmented) melanomas is inexcusable for any app which claims to screen for skin cancer.
It's easy to be critical of the FDA review process, particularly when it sometimes feels like the U.S. is falling behind other countries in adopting new technologies. But results like these are a good reminder of why careful oversight is necessary.
