🗣️ Talk About It Thursday: Weston County Edition
Where coal fueled communities, oil sparked booms, and the Wild West still echoes.

🏔️ 1. A County Born from Coal
Established in 1890, Weston County was named after John Weston, a geologist and surveyor who, alongside Frank Mondell, discovered rich coal deposits north of Newcastle in 1887. This discovery led to the development of the Cambria coal camp, which by 1890 employed 750 people from 23 nationalities, highlighting the area's early industrial diversity.

🛢️ 2. Oil Boom Beginnings
In March 1920, a significant oil discovery near Osage marked the start of a new era for Weston County. The well produced between 1,500 and 2,500 barrels of oil per day, attracting workers and leading to the establishment of refineries in Osage, Newcastle, and other towns. This boom solidified oil as a cornerstone of the county's economy.

🏛️ 3. Newcastle: The County Seat
Founded in 1889, Newcastle quickly became the administrative center of Weston County. The Weston County Courthouse, built in 1909 using native stone, stands as a testament to the town's historical significance and architectural and architectural heritage

🐑 4. Upton: From Irontown to "Best Town on Earth"
Originally known as Irontown, Upton began as a supply stop for cowboys and ranchers in the mid-1880s. The town later adopted the slogan "Best Town on Earth," reflecting its community pride and unique history.

🧠🌿 Mindful Mondays with WHRN

For the ones who are always in motion, always holding it together — pause. Let this be your reminder: healing takes time, and so does being human.

Patience isn’t passive. It’s the quiet, radical choice to honor your own pace — even when the world demands urgency.

This week’s emotional check-in practices:

Progress isn’t always visible: Just because you can’t see your growth doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Sometimes the most powerful shifts are the slowest — like softening your inner voice or choosing rest over guilt.

You deserve the same grace you give others: You offer endless patience to patients, colleagues, loved ones — extend even a fraction of that compassion inward. You are learning, healing, growing. That takes tenderness.

Not everything needs fixing today: Some emotions just need space. Some questions don’t have immediate answers. It’s okay to be in the in-between.

You’re allowed to be a work in progress: There’s no finish line to being well, or doing it right. You’re not behind — you’re unfolding, moment by moment.

Being patient with yourself is a quiet kind of strength — one that builds resilience from the inside out.

✨ What’s one way you’re giving yourself permission to slow down this week?

🧠🌿 Mindful Mondays with WHRN

For the ones who hold everyone else up — don’t forget to hold space for you.

Burnout recovery in healthcare isn’t as simple as a day off or a deep breath. It’s about healing from the inside out — from emotional overload, moral fatigue, and the quiet weight of always being “on.”

This week’s emotional check-in moves:

You are human first, healer second: You’re allowed to have limits. You’re allowed to be tired. Needing recovery doesn’t mean you’re weak — it means you’ve been carrying too much, for too long.

Rest is essential care: Just like you tell your patients to rest and recover, you deserve the same. Even five minutes of intentional stillness can signal safety to your nervous system.

You don’t have to save everyone: You’re doing enough. Truly. Let that be enough today. The world doesn’t heal because you overextend — it heals when you’re well enough to show up sustainably.

Recovery isn’t quitting — it’s recalibrating: Whether you need a pause, a boundary, or just a moment to cry in the supply closet — it all counts. Your body knows what you need. Listen.

Healthcare heroes are still human. And healing isn’t selfish — it’s how you keep going.

✨ How are you honoring your recovery this week — even in small ways?
