Last year I was interviewed by C&R Research regarding my research on Healthcare Disparities and access to healthcare for Brown and Black communities. They recently shared the interview with me and thought I would share with you.

“The core issue Jennifer identifies based on her experience working with patients is that Black and Brown communities routinely feel dismissed, mistrusted, and unseen in healthcare settings. She describes this experience as leaving patients feeling “shame, disappointed, feeling unseen.” “

Healthcare access is not just about coverage — it’s about trust.

In her 2023 dissertation, “Knowledge, Mistrust, and Access to Healthcare for African American Adults in Illinois: Implications for Social Workers,” Dr. Jennifer M. Doucet examines how informed African Americans with insurance still face barriers rooted in systemic inequities and historical mistrust.

Through a qualitative phenomenological study, four key themes emerged:
1️⃣ Education – Knowledge empowers patients to advocate for themselves.
2️⃣ Experience – Past encounters shape future healthcare decisions.
3️⃣ Resources – Access to quality care remains uneven across communities.
4️⃣ Power – Political and institutional systems continue to influence who receives care — and how.

For social workers, policymakers, and healthcare leaders, this research underscores the need for culturally responsive practice, equitable policy, and community-based trust-building.

How can we, as professionals, help bridge the gap between healthcare systems and the communities they serve?
