If you ask anyone who has had a baby whether they would have liked to have a home visiting physician looking after them after the baby was born, you will invariably hear a resounding "YES!" πŸ‘

Unfortunately, this resource has not been easily available in the US.... Until now!

If you are having a baby, you will be healing from a major physical event, adjusting to your new role as a parent, going to frequent pediatrician appointments (on average 4 visits during the first month alone!), trying to find time to eat, go to the bathroom, sleep! I don't want to scare anyone, but it is not an easy time, and it's important and necessary to have your village up and ready to help you after that baby comes.

Comprehensive postpartum care for both MOMS and babies has been shown to decrease the prevalence of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders.

So if you're asking if it's worth it, I'd say, "No, it's not worth it, it's ESSENTIAL." This is care that every woman deserves. This is care that you deserve. πŸ’™β€οΈπŸ’šπŸ§‘πŸ’œπŸ’›

Here's my list of important supplies to have at the ready when your baby comes. This list is not exhaustive by any means and I'll probably have a Supplies Part 2 one of these days, too! Just a few things you may want to consider getting before the baby comes.

One additional point: You do not NEED to have a pump before the baby comes. Many women do not need to pump right away, so you likely still have time to get one later if you need it. If you do end up needing a pump right away, your hospital will supply one for you while you're there, and then it's usually not too hard to find a rental pump to use until you get one for yourself - so don't stress about this one!

Google has changed our lives. But is it really a good idea to get your medical advice from the internet? πŸ” So much of what is out there is NOT reliable, so you need to vet your sources! Or, find a doctor who you can reach easily with questions and trust that you are getting good information that is relevant to you! πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈπŸ©Ί

This is a common (and valid!) concern for breastfeeding parents. Luckily, we set things up to monitor a baby's weight closely in the first couple weeks to ensure they are eating enough. πŸ€±πŸ½πŸ€±πŸΏπŸ€±πŸΌπŸ§‘πŸ½β€πŸΌπŸ€±πŸΎπŸ€±πŸ€±πŸ»

If your baby isn't gaining weight, or your pediatrician isn't sure whether it's a breastfeeding problem at hand or some other reason why there's a weight gain problem, contact a Breastfeeding Medicine physician to get help right away!

Why choose an out-of-network doctor for your care? πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈ

I have a high-deductible PPO health insurance plan. My daughter recently needed to see a specialist, so I started the search. My pediatrician gave me recommendations, and I also asked friends if they had anyone they liked. I then went to the insurance directory to see who was in-network, because of course it makes sense to use an in-network doc, right? I won’t need to pay as much if I go in-network, right? Well, I couldn’t find anyone from my procured list who was in-network, but after looking at websites and watching videos and hearing more recommendations from friends and family, I found the perfect out-of-network doctor who had everything I wanted:

βœ… Experience
βœ… Convenient location
βœ… Accessible office
βœ… Friendly and competent office staff
βœ… An appointment within a week
βœ… Highly recommended

I chose this doc because I want the best for my family, though there was this part of me that still felt hesitant to use an out-of-network doctor.

And you know what? I couldn’t have made a better decision. We saw this specialist 3 times last year, paid our out-of-pocket expenses after the insurance was billed, and never even got close to our deductible. Even if we had gone to an in-network doctor, we would have paid the same amount because we never would have reached our deductible. The physician was amazing - he spent time with us, answered our questions, included us in the decision-making, had a wonderful bedside manner, and my daughter actually looked forward to her visits! 😊 And the peace of mind to know that I went to the doctor I wanted to go to was worth every penny. πŸͺ™

Don’t base your decisions on the insurance companies’ rules and options. They are set up to make the insurance companies as much money as they can make. πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’° Make your medical decisions based on getting the best care out there for you and your family. You will not regret it.

I know I don’t. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Cash Pay Docs Do It Better!

There are some amazing docs out there in "the system," but they are limited by the constraints of insurance companies and administrators. Choosing a cash pay practice ensures that your doctor is working FOR YOU and is dedicated to providing the best care they can πŸ‘
