Have you ever been driving and had that AHA! Moment?

Or washing the dishes?

Or doing anything else that doesn’t require your full, focused attention?

It’s because your brain is moving from a focused state to an unfocused state and is able to begin making new connections.
🧠
It’s like our brain goes from seeing the world as a naturalistic or realistic painter to an impressionist artist.
🤓
By giving our brain this time to unfocus, it finds calm and through calm the AHA’s happen.
🤩
You can cultivate this through a daily meditation practice, that actually helps to de-excite your nervous system, rather than stimulate it like tasks do.
🧐
De-exciting the nervous system gives us the benefit of the brilliance that comes from the unfocused mind creating new possibilities, along with the benefit of getting deep physical rest.
⭐️
The best part is your body already knows this state of being, and meditation simply works as a tool to help us cultivate it.

The other day I was out for a run.
(I hate running, btw, but hey we gotta keep our bodies moving and my almost-peloton isn’t here yet)

I was out with my Partner and our Dog, Luna.
🐶
Usually I have Luna because, like me, she sucks at running long-distance.
🤷🏻‍♀️
[ANYWAYS] I was running alone for this stretch, and I was pretty proud of myself because I was “running with no one watching”
👀
And then I smelled this tree.
👃
It’s amazing scent made me circle back and stick my face in the flowers...
💐
And then off I went after mindfully enjoying the beauty of spring.
👋🏼
This is a sneaky benefit of meditation...

You literally notice enough of what’s happening around you to stop and smell the flowers!

🧘‍♀️Happy World Meditation Day!

It was 9 years ago or so I found myself in the employee bathroom of my restaurant in NYC with my first full-blown panic attack.

It was peak hours on a Saturday night and we were slammed.

Somehow I talked myself through it and got back behind the bar.

(And I’m absolutely sure I got drunk af that night to help me cope.)

These kept happening randomly - most notably on the corner of 14/8 🤦🏻‍♀️

So I started searching...
Acupuncture helped a little
Therapy was leaning towards pills..and then I found the woman who became my Meditation Teacher.

(In fact I snuck out of work for an hour to hear her speak...)

Once I started practicing meditation, specifically Vedic Meditation, which is now what I teach, I almost immediately saw a shift in my relationship with stress and anxiety.

Now, I am so grateful for that time because I’ve learned you can actually train your body and mind towards greater happiness.
