Tone was born the moment I realized that that uncomfortable feeling was growth, when I stopped editing my thoughts and started listening to myself. I’ve said it a few times on here, but I somewhat selfishly created a dermatology practice for myself (or what I would want as a patient): warm and welcoming, a place where I felt seen and heard. And you all found me. The incredible people who have trusted me and partnered with me in their care make it worth it EVERY single day! There’s only ONE way to get to where you want to be. You can’t get around uncomfortable feelings or feelings of failure, you can’t avoid challenges, learning, and growth. The only way is get to the other side is to go straight through. For me, I unlearned that beauty belongs to one type of person, I reclaimed it because it belongs to all of us. I shared it. I learned that empowering people with knowledge about the condition of their skin, not only makes them feel beautiful but powerful and fearless. I’m still learning and have more growth to do but honored to have a moment to pause and share my story along the way. Huge thanks to ❤️ 📸 .co

Dermatology is one of the least diverse specialties in medicine (with only 3% of dermatologists being Black) and this without a doubt impacts the care we are able to deliver to all people. For me, skin equity looks like addressing the underpinnings of inequities in healthcare. We need to address systemic racism and implicit biases. We need more training and education and cultural competency. Only then can we deeply understand social, historical, cultural, and community influences on health behaviors so that we can better tailor our care to the person in front of us. This is the most pressing issue in medicine right now, and proud to partner with a brand that amplifies it.

Understand that being a woman in medicine means so many different things. We are all bringing our own unique perspectives and intersectionalities to our experience and that’s powerful. For me, the added layers of being a Black woman, a daughter of immigrants, and a mother meant that my experiences in medicine at times felt so specific that it was isolating. Joining groups and organizations and sharing my story has really helped me grow as a leader and advocate for other women. I’m honored to have a platform and an opportunity to talk more about my path in medicine and talk candidly about on LIVE (Thursday 2/4 11:15a EST/10:15a CST) . I will be kicking off a month long series featuring some amazing women & their stories including tennis star and Illuminate Me Co-Creator Sloane Stephens .
