RML Specialty Hospital

RML Specialty Hospital Providing innovative, compassionate care
for patients with complex medical needs Accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC). It extends to clinical research.

Established in 1987, RML Specialty Hospital primarily focused on treating and weaning patients dependent on mechanical ventilators, and today is the largest single ventilator weaning hospital in the nation. With locations in Hinsdale and Chicago, RML Specialty Hospital has received multiple awards and recognition from the National Association of Long-term Care Hospitals (NALTH) for its innovative

methodologies in treating patients with complex medical conditions. The Medically Complex program brings the expertise of RML and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) together to provide the very best in medical treatment and rehabilitation therapies for those suffering from multiple conditions. Dedicated to individualized patient care
As the center of excellence for long-term acute care, RML meets each patient's individualized needs through a compassionate approach to health care delivered by a caring staff. In every area, RML team members take time to listen, lend a helping hand, and address the medical and personal needs of each patient. Physicians and staff are on-site, around the clock, so patients are constantly monitored to immediately respond to patient needs. Our team is made up of 200+ physicians and more than 600 nurses, respiratory and rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, and clinical dietitians who are dedicated to providing care and comfort to RML patients. Many of our team members have made their careers at RML and have worked together closely for years. We believe our cohesive, mutually supportive team and our commitment to healing promote a culture of care that is unlike any other long-term acute care hospital. Committed to advanced research
Improving the quality of life for our patients doesn't end with hands on treatment. RML is currently involved in several studies that may change the way individuals are weaned from mechanical ventilators and enable them to lead more independent lives.

Move a Little. Live a Lot. 💙

Today we celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day—a reminder that staying active at any age supports strength, independence, and overall well-being.

For many of our patients at RML Specialty Hospital, movement looks different—but every step, stretch, and small victory matters. Whether it’s working with therapy teams, taking a short walk, or simply sitting up and engaging in daily activities, progress is progress.

Our interdisciplinary teams are dedicated to helping patients regain function, build endurance, and improve quality of life through personalized, compassionate care.

Because it’s not about how much you move—it’s about continuing to move forward.

In moments when so much can feel uncertain, how care is delivered matters just as much as the care itself.

At RML Specialty Hospital, we recognize that mental health and overall well-being are essential to healing. Through compassionate, trauma-informed care, we work to reduce anxiety, restore a sense of control, and support the whole person—mind and body.

Because true recovery happens when patients are cared for with both clinical excellence and genuine empathy.

Today, we remember.

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we live with every day.

At RML Specialty Hospital, we also recognize the courage of the veterans and families we have the privilege to care for—each with stories of resilience, strength, and service.

As we pause today, we remember, reflect, and express our deepest gratitude.

Substance Use Is a Medical Condition

Substance use is not simply a choice—it’s a medical condition that affects brain function, behavior, and recovery.

In LTCH settings, understanding this is critical. Stigma can prevent patients from seeking help and impact their recovery journey.

At RML Specialty Hospital, we treat the whole person—with compassion, support, and evidence-based care.

Anxiety Is Part of the Journey

Anxiety during recovery isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a common and valid response to serious illness, hospitalization, and uncertainty.

It can show up in many ways, including restlessness, trouble sleeping, feeling on edge, or difficulty concentrating. In LTCH settings, these experiences are often tied to loss of control, changes in health, and the stress of recovery.

Recognizing anxiety matters. When patients feel heard and supported, communication improves and healing becomes more manageable.

At RML Specialty Hospital, we support both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery—because whole-person care leads to better outcomes.

💙 The Power of Being Heard

At RML Specialty Hospital, patient experience is rooted in connection, trust, and compassionate care. Feedback like this reminds us that sometimes the most meaningful part of healing is feeling truly heard, supported, and never rushed.

Moments like these—highlighting the impact of attentive, empathetic care from team members like respiratory therapists—shape the way we continue to grow and serve our patients.

✨ Your voice matters. Every story, every experience, helps us deliver care that is not only clinically excellent, but deeply human.

Delirium ≠ Permanent Decline

Sudden confusion doesn’t always mean permanent cognitive decline—it may be delirium, a temporary and treatable condition caused by illness, medications, or environment.

Early recognition matters. With the right care, clarity can return.

At RML Specialty Hospital, we focus on identifying and treating delirium to support better outcomes for our patients.

In a long-term acute care hospital, healing is rarely just physical. Many patients face fear, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion alongside complex medical needs. Psychiatry plays a vital role in meeting patients where they are—helping them process their experiences, regain a sense of control, and find hope in the midst of difficult moments.

Through compassionate conversations, thoughtful care, and clinical expertise, psychiatry helps patients move forward—not just in their recovery, but in their overall well-being. At RML Specialty Hospital, we recognize that words, understanding, and human connection can be just as powerful as any medical treatment.
