On January 15, North American Rescue Education & Training instructed two STOP THE BLEED® courses at the Amputee Coalition Conference, training 27 participants in lifesaving hemorrhage control skills. Several attendees shared personal experiences with traumatic injury and limb loss, reinforcing how important accessible bleeding control training is for our communities.

Beyond anecdotes, not much is known about the efficacy of Stop the Bleed (STB) education and equipping. Maryland took a look at it(actually again, there were 2 other studies on this in MD)…
Study: State of Maryland analyzed autopsy results for all GSW and Stab homicides 2005-2017. They identified vascular injuries which could have been amenable to STB taught techniques.
-6514 Homicides, 5765 with penetrating injuries(84%GSW or 16%Stab).
-Death from isolated extremity injuries was rare (1.3%) HOWEVER, 44% of homicides experienced extremity wounds as well.
-SO WHAT??? Extremity vascular injuries are very common in shootings and stabbings. Even though there may be significant other injuries, stopping extremity hemorrhage rapidly can lead to increased survivability from other wounds (STOP ALL THE BLEEDING YOU CAN).

Being prepared can save a life. 🩸 We recently brought Stop the Bleed training to the Garfield Ridge community, teaching participants the lifesaving skills needed to become an immediate responder during an emergency. From recognizing severe bleeding to learning how to act quickly, these skills empower people to step in and help when it matters most. Many who attend leave feeling more confident, capable, and ready to respond in a critical situation.
