What if you were suddenly faced with a diagnosis of a severe, genetic disease of your new born child? On February 17, 2012, Jenni and Steve Losacco had to face this question with their second daughter, McKenzie Rainn Losacco. At just three months old, they were told their daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). Then on April 7th, 2012 at the very young age of 4 months and 29 days, McKenzie Rainn sadly passed away due to complications from SMA.
SMA is a severe, often fatal, genetic disorder in which muscles involved in many essential functions, such as movement, become progressively weaker and ultimately waste away (atrophy) and die. About one in every forty people carries a mutated SMN1 gene and every year, about one in every 6,000-10,000 babies is born with SMA. This family has spent countless, sleepless nights in the hospital with their little angel. On top of that Jenni and Steve were also doing their best to juggle work and the demanding job of raising their other daughter Madison. Steve has been a police officer for the Chicago Police Department for 15 years and Jenni has been working at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL for the last 3 years. The moment you meet this family, you immediately understand and realize how generous, loving, and wonderful they are. McKenzie and her family’s courage and will to live life to its fullest have inspired us to organize a benefit dinner in her honor.
On Friday August 24th, from 6:30 pm to 12 am, we will be holding a benefit for the McKenzie Losacco family and to raise awareness for all the families affected by SMA. The benefit will be held at Casa Royale, located at 783 Lee Street/Mannheim Road, Des Plaines, IL. This is our opportunity to bring friends, family, and the community together to support the Losacco family.
