Do you love SWEETS like I do?!

In the July issue of Connection I write about one of my favorite topics โ€” sugar! ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ

Thereโ€™s no getting around the fact that sugar is seductive, enticing and addicting, but there are some smart ways to be savvy about adding sugar into your every day eating.

As a registered dietitian nutritionist who helps people navigate the sweet food world daily, here are some of my tips and tricks:

โ€” Use plain yogurt and sweeten with fresh or frozen fruit and drizzle with honey, maple syrup or agave nectar. ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿ“

โ€” Add berries, cut fruit and/or fruit purees to cereal, cottage cheese and salad dressings. ๐ŸŽ

โ€” Create your own coffee drinks with milk, your favorite sweetener and a dash of cinnamon, cocoa or nutmeg. โ˜•๏ธ

โ€” Enjoy dates and/or figs as a sweet treat. ๐Ÿ’œ

โ€” Flavor sparkling water with a twist of lemon, lime or a splash of 100% fruit juice. ๐Ÿ‹ ๐Ÿ‹โ€๐ŸŸฉ

โ€” Craving ice cream, cake or brownies? Enjoy a small amount of the REAL deal. ๐Ÿฆ

A good rule of thumb with sugar is: Downsize, donโ€™t deprive. ๐ŸŒŸ

To get find sustainable seafood:
โžก๏ธ Check for eco-labels with MSC, ASC and/or BAP certifications on packaging.
โžก๏ธ Use seafood guides: Seafoodwatch.org and NOAA FishWatch.
โžก๏ธ Buy local and seasonal when possible for lower carbon footprint options.
โžก๏ธ Choose the โ€œCatch of the Dayโ€ options to eat a variety of seafood.
โžก๏ธ Try subscription-based seafood programs like .
โžก๏ธ Eat more bivalves: oysters, mussels and clams.
โžก๏ธ Savor small fish that are low on the food chain like sardines and anchovies.
โžก๏ธ Look for pole-caught, responsibly farmed or wild-caught seafood.

Thereโ€™s no one more qualified than a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)! Happy RDN Day to my AMAZING colleagues who make it there mission to share science-based information about nutrition. Itโ€™s not only a passion, but requires rigorous study in the field by completing a college degree in Food and Nutrition, a required supervised practice experience, as well as
passing a national exam and staying up-to-date with 75 hours of continuing education hours every five years.

Happy October, friends! ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ ๐ŸŽƒ

It was super fun to contribute my favorite kitchen staples to this monthโ€™s issue of . ๐Ÿงก

It was hard to pick just 4๏ธโƒฃ, but here are mine:

๐Ÿ  Canned fish - tuna, salmon and sardines are handy protein and omega-3 fat sources to toss over mixed greens, into wraps or on toast. Yum!

๐Ÿซ Wild blueberries โ€” I always have a frozen bag in the freezer to put into cereal, yogurt or a smoothie. With double the antioxidants, you canโ€™t go wrong! (๐Ÿ’™ )

๐ŸŒฟ Herbs and spices โ€” cumin, paprika and fresh basil. I love making my own curry powder and using fresh herbs in salads, soups and roasted veggies. ๐Ÿฅฆ

๐Ÿง€ Cottage cheese โ€” is a go-to protein, calcium and potassium source. I love whisking into eggs, topping with fruit and adding to dips. (โค๏ธ )

Every fall I welcome โ€œPumpkin Spiceโ€ season! ๐ŸŽƒ

I am celebrating with ๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—•๐˜‚๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ!

Spread it on toast, dollop onto crackers or swirl into plain yogurt or cottage cheese. Yum!

This 3-ingredient recipe is super simple (with no added sugar). โœจ

All you need is:

1-15 oz. can pumpkin, unsweetened
6 prunes
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice blend

Put all ingredients into a food processor, pulse until well blended and enjoy!

I love to add a protein boost by scrambling cottage cheese into eggs.๐Ÿฅš (Shout out to my friends for their handy 4 oz. cups with 12 grams of protein!)

Enjoy over a bed of leafy greens like arugula and top with avocado. ๐Ÿฅ‘
