Do you love SWEETS like I do?!

In the July issue of Connection I write about one of my favorite topics — sugar! 🍭🍬🍭

There’s no getting around the fact that sugar is seductive, enticing and addicting, but there are some smart ways to be savvy about adding sugar into your every day eating.

As a registered dietitian nutritionist who helps people navigate the sweet food world daily, here are some of my tips and tricks:

— Use plain yogurt and sweeten with fresh or frozen fruit and drizzle with honey, maple syrup or agave nectar. 🫐 🍓

— Add berries, cut fruit and/or fruit purees to cereal, cottage cheese and salad dressings. 🍎

— Create your own coffee drinks with milk, your favorite sweetener and a dash of cinnamon, cocoa or nutmeg. ☕️

— Enjoy dates and/or figs as a sweet treat. 💜

— Flavor sparkling water with a twist of lemon, lime or a splash of 100% fruit juice. 🍋 🍋‍🟩

— Craving ice cream, cake or brownies? Enjoy a small amount of the REAL deal. 🍦

A good rule of thumb with sugar is: Downsize, don’t deprive. 🌟

Celebrating Earth Month 🌍 with a 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 cooking class with my friends 🧡

Whipped up my Sesame Soy Baked Salmon and Curried Shrimp & Veggie Skillet.

To get find sustainable seafood:
➡️ Check for eco-labels with MSC, ASC and/or BAP certifications on packaging.
➡️ Use seafood guides: Seafoodwatch.org and NOAA FishWatch.
➡️ Buy local and seasonal when possible for lower carbon footprint options.
➡️ Choose the “Catch of the Day” options to eat a variety of seafood.
➡️ Try subscription-based seafood programs like .
➡️ Eat more bivalves: oysters, mussels and clams.
➡️ Savor small fish that are low on the food chain like sardines and anchovies.
➡️ Look for pole-caught, responsibly farmed or wild-caught seafood.

There’s no one more qualified than a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)! Happy RDN Day to my AMAZING colleagues who make it there mission to share science-based information about nutrition. It’s not only a passion, but requires rigorous study in the field by completing a college degree in Food and Nutrition, a required supervised practice experience, as well as
passing a national exam and staying up-to-date with 75 hours of continuing education hours every five years.

What a fun 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆 celebration for my Mom this weekend! It was such a thrill to ring in this special milestone birthday with the woman who always amazes me with her 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵, thirst for 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 and unwavering 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵. You are always in our hearts. Happy 85, Mom! ❤️🧡💛❤️🧡

Did you know all plant foods — fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils and whole grains, have MAGICAL anti-inflammatory properties? 🧚‍♂️

Plant foods contain phytonutrients, fiber and important vitamins and minerals that fend off damage to cells, prevent inflammatory disease states like diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

Happy October, friends! 🕷️ 🎃

It was super fun to contribute my favorite kitchen staples to this month’s issue of . 🧡

It was hard to pick just 4️⃣, but here are mine:

🐠 Canned fish - tuna, salmon and sardines are handy protein and omega-3 fat sources to toss over mixed greens, into wraps or on toast. Yum!

🫐 Wild blueberries — I always have a frozen bag in the freezer to put into cereal, yogurt or a smoothie. With double the antioxidants, you can’t go wrong! (💙 )

🌿 Herbs and spices — cumin, paprika and fresh basil. I love making my own curry powder and using fresh herbs in salads, soups and roasted veggies. 🥦

🧀 Cottage cheese — is a go-to protein, calcium and potassium source. I love whisking into eggs, topping with fruit and adding to dips. (❤️ )

Every fall I welcome “Pumpkin Spice” season! 🎃

I am celebrating with 𝗣𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗸𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿!

Spread it on toast, dollop onto crackers or swirl into plain yogurt or cottage cheese. Yum!

This 3-ingredient recipe is super simple (with no added sugar). ✨

All you need is:

1-15 oz. can pumpkin, unsweetened
6 prunes
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice blend

Put all ingredients into a food processor, pulse until well blended and enjoy!

I love to add a protein boost by scrambling cottage cheese into eggs.🥚 (Shout out to my friends for their handy 4 oz. cups with 12 grams of protein!)

Enjoy over a bed of leafy greens like arugula and top with avocado. 🥑
