Part of living with Lymphedema…….

😷 Lymphedema & Phlegm — let’s talk about it

A lot of people don’t realize this, but excessive phlegm, throat clearing, chest heaviness, or that constant “mucus stuck” feeling can be part of living with lymphedema—especially when the lymphatic system isn’t draining well. 🦋

When lymph fluid backs up, it doesn’t just affect arms or legs. It can impact the neck, chest, and airway too. Add inflammation, reduced movement, reflux, medications, or infections—and suddenly phlegm becomes another daily struggle no one warned us about. 🩵

It’s uncomfortable.
It’s exhausting.
And it’s real. 🦋

If you deal with chronic phlegm, post-nasal drip, coughing, or tightness in your chest with lymphedema—you’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. 🩵

💬 Let’s talk about the symptoms people don’t see.
🩵 Awareness matters.
📣 Sharing helps others feel less alone.

Common symptoms people report with lymphedema-related phlegm:🦋

• Constant throat clearing
• Thick or sticky mucus
• Feeling like something is “stuck” in the throat
• Chest heaviness or tightness
• Chronic cough without illness
• Post-nasal drip
• Hoarseness or voice changes
• Difficulty swallowing at times
• Increased symptoms when lying down
• Worsening during flares, infections, or inflammation
• Neck, chest, or facial swelling
• Feeling short of breath without lung disease🩵🦋

✨The Weight I Can’t Put Down ✨

Some days, lymphedema feels less like a medical diagnosis and more like I’m carrying an invisible backpack filled with wet sand that no one else can see.

It’s not just swelling. It’s:

🌀 A constant awareness of my own skin—like my body suddenly has borders I didn’t know existed.
⚡ Random sparks of pain that light up nerves I wasn’t even aware I had.
💧 A heaviness that doesn’t match what the scale says, but dictates everything from how far I walk to what chair I can sit in.
📦 A pressure that has opinions—telling me when to elevate, when to stop, when “fun” has an expiration time.

The strangest part?

I can look fine and still feel like my limbs are wrapped in concrete. I can smile and still be calculating how much longer I can stand. I can show up—and still pay for it later.

Lymphedema isn’t just physical.
It’s mental.
It’s logistical.
It’s energy economics—and the currency is my body.

If you see me cancel plans, sit differently, stretch mid-conversation, or choose comfort over cute, it’s not because I don’t want to be there.

It’s because I’m carrying something heavy you can’t see—and I’m doing my best not to drop it.

🩵
To everyone with lymphedema:
Your invisible work counts. Your adjustments are not weakness. They are strategy, survival, and strength🩵🦋

Come in for a lymphatic treatment instead

Diuretics are bad for lymphedema because they remove water but leave behind protein-rich lymph fluid. This concentrates the proteins, causing them to draw more water back into the tissues, leading to increased swelling, fibrosis, and inflammation over time. Diuretics can also cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, which are harmful to general health and are not recommended for long-term lymphedema management.

My Story

My name is Babette Maiss and I came to the States 30 years ago, from Germany. I have been living in Chico for the past 26 years. About 20 years ago I decided to switch careers and become a Massage Practitioner. I hold a Certification from the State of California. My practice is geared more towards medical- therapeutic techniques. I have over 1000 hrs training, in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Neuromuscular Therapy, Sports Massage, Reflexology, Ortho- Bionomy, Prenatal and Lymphatic Massage. Using those different modalities helps several different issues, such as low back pain, sciatica, IT Band tightness or neck/shoulder problems. I recently became certified as a Lymphedema Therapist, being able to help a wide variety of issues, related to the Lymph System, using Manuel Lymph Drainage, Bandaging and Garment Fitting.

I love my work and look forward being able to help so many different people, making them feel better, sometimes even changing their life. I believe continuing education is very important and I always try to keep up with new training. That way I am able to use a wide variety of modalities.

As a Lymphedema Therapist I am able to order custom fit garments from Juzo, Jovipak and Jobst. The Academy of Lymphatic Studies, where I did my training, also has garments available.
