Ask someone in their 60s, 70s, or 80s about their strongest memories, and most of them will come from the same window: ages 15 to 25.

Psychologists call this the "reminiscence bump."

It's why the songs from our teenage years still hit different. Why we remember that first car, that first job, that first heartbreak in vivid detail.

Those years shape who we become. And when we sit with someone near the end of life, those are often the stories they want to tell.

What's your strongest memory from that time?

🌸Spring is the perfect time to tackle those little things that make a big difference. Here are a few easy wins to check off this season:

Around the house → Swap out winter clothes and donate what you didn't wear → Deep clean one room you've been avoiding → Replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms

Life admin → Shred old paperwork you no longer need → Update emergency contacts on your accounts → Review your insurance policies and beneficiaries

Peace of mind → Put your important documents in one place → Have a conversation with your family about your wishes → Make a plan, even if it's just the first step

You don't have to do it all at once. Pick one thing and start there.

Every family has that one recipe. The one nobody ever wrote down. Here's how to make sure it doesn't disappear:

1. Sit down with the person who makes it best. Watch them cook it. Ask questions as they go.

2. Cook it wrong on purpose (once). You'll quickly learn what makes their version special when yours doesn't taste the same.

3. Include the story behind it. Where did it come from? Who passed it down? Why does it matter?

4. Save it in their handwriting. Ask them to write it out on a recipe card. Their handwriting is part of the heirloom.

5. Pair it with a photo. A picture of them in the kitchen, an old holiday dinner, or even just the finished dish on their favorite plate.

This one's for you. The one who's missing someone today.

The one who still reaches for the phone to call them. Even though you know they won't answer.

The one who hears a song and feels it all over again. Some memories don't fade — and that's okay.

The one who's fine until someone asks how you're doing. You don't always have to be strong.

The one who still sets an extra place at the table in your heart. Love doesn't end just because someone's gone.

The one who grieves in silence. We see you. You're not alone.

The love you carry for them? That doesn't go away. It just proves how much they mattered.

Planning ahead doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here are five things to think about as you get started:

1. What type of service feels right to you?
2. Where do you want your final resting place to be?
3. How do you want to be remembered?
4. Who do you want involved in the planning?
5. Does your family know your wishes?

You don't have to figure it all out today. But starting the conversation is the most important step.

Psychologists have found that we don't remember experiences in full—we remember the peak moment and the ending. It's called the Peak-End Rule.

It's why the final farewell matters so much. A meaningful service gives families a moment of connection, reflection, and closure that stays with them long after the day ends. It's not about perfection. It's about creating a moment that honors a life and brings comfort to those left behind.

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing.

A visitation is a time for family and friends to gather, offer condolences, and support one another. The casket may be open or closed—or there may be no casket present at all.

A viewing specifically refers to a time when the deceased is present and the casket is open, allowing loved ones to see and say goodbye.

Both serve an important purpose in the grieving process. Not sure which is right for your family? We're here to help you understand your options.

It's not about how long we're here. It's about how we show up, who we love, and what we leave behind.
