A Houston Texas Marshall Middle School Student Passes Away Following a 'Medical Emergency'

The father was asked as reports stated that the defibrillator at the campus wasn't working. He responded saying, "The defibrillator works. She [the school nurse] just didn't know how to run it." — FOX 26 Houston

It takes a short amount of time to learn and stay up to date with your skills and equipment. This very unfortunate incident and loss is exactly why everyone should know how to perform CPR as well as use an AED, a device that will guide you through the process once turned on. It is also extremely important that equipment such as the AED be tested to make sure it is functioning properly. This loss of a life could have been avoided with the proper interventions. My condolences to the parents and family of Landon Payton. Rest in peace.

The father of a student who had a medical emergency on Wednesday and later died is upset with Houston ISD regarding transparency about what happened to his child.

Knowing how to give immediate affective and proper CPR, as well as the use of an AED, can be the difference between life and death. It never hurts to take a CPR class whether it be through an AHA BLS or AHA Heart Savers class!
