When you let go of the things you can’t control, you become even more powerful. I often repeat a mantra saying "it is not about me and I can't do anything about it" in certain life situations. It serves me as a reminder that I can only control myself, my emotions, my reactions, my life. It leaves me with so much more space to deal with my own stuff. I encourage you to give it a try.

Let’s acknowledge the 🐘 — it’s really hard to open up to someone you don’t know well!

Will you be judged if you’re honest? Will you feel pressure to censor yourself? Will your therapist tell you something is hopelessly wrong with you?

The answer to all of this is a resounding NO!

There’s no shame in being a procrastinator! But there are ways to get moving on things you’ve put off. Here are a few tips:

✔ Make a to-do list of really simple tasks that don’t give you anxiety. Get the easiest one done first thing in the morning, and relish the feeling of crossing it off your list.
✔ Break up bigger goals (like being tidier) into smaller tasks, and break those smaller tasks into even smaller increments. For example, doing whatever dishes you can in the span of your favorite song, or putting away clothes during a commercial break.
✔ Connect with a friend who can hold you accountable, and return the favor by holding them accountable to their goals with weekly or daily check-ins.
✔ Don’t beat yourself up. There will be slip ups, and that’s ok! Dust yourself off and try again.

Give more meaningful compliments.

I was thinking about the best compliment I’ve ever gotten, you would never guess what it was. In some ways, it actually led me to my career.

It made me stop and think about how thoughtful compliments can affect the way people feel and see themselves and impact them in ways we don’t even know.

You think you’ve expressed your point and the other person thinks they understand what you’re saying, but in the end, both of you could walk away interpreting the conversation in totally different ways.

The better you’re able to communicate and listen, the more potential you have to really connect with people. There are ways to improve your communication skills and it does require practice, so let’s make it a purpose to begin now.

*Wean out the toxic people/social media accounts that leave you feeling anxious or angry.

*Turn off your social media notifications.

*Make it a point not to look at your phone 1 hour before bed, and 1 hour after you wake up.

*Spend less time checking in with friends on social media, and more time doing it over IRL or phone conversation.

Start by internalizing this statement: Your truth is not everyone else’s truth.

Be open to hearing about other people’s experiences and accepting them, even when they differ from your own. This is how you build empathy, and empathy is how we all build a better world.

When I first opened my practice, I knew I wanted to give my clients what they really needed. That is still true today. I am confidant about the work that I will do and the emotional journey I will walk my clients through. I'm also confident about the sense of peace, calm and reassurance they will feel after.

Call it a bucket list, call it a someday list -- whatever you call it, let’s make a list of your big dreams!

What have you always wanted to do? A big trip; a new sport (surfing, anyone?); something wildly thrilling; a tattoo; a totally new hairstyle; learning a different language; connecting with a friend you haven’t spoken to since high school?

Whatever it is, write it down!

Once you’ve made your list, go through it and determine what one thing you can accomplish this year.

Just putting this list together can bring you joy (and a few hours of daydreaming, which, tbh, is so much fun)!
