What Does Urgent Care Treat?

Urgent care centers can treat most non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Through testing, with x-rays and bloodwork as needed, they can diagnose and treat the majority of cases on-site without having to send the patient for additional testing. They can prescribe medications, administer IV medications and monitor patients' symptoms to help them with diagnosing the cause of concern while keeping the patient as comfortable as possible. Urgent care centers are also able to stitch open wounds and apply casts or splints to broken bones where required. For a full list of services that the urgent care center near you provides, you can check their website.

What Is the Difference between a Walk-in Clinic and Urgent Care?

Let's start with the similarities! Both walk-in clinics and urgent care clinics offer convenient walk-in appointments and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Both healthcare centers can work in this way because neither treats life-threatening medical emergencies. Where they are different is typically in the level of expertise and range of services they provide. As such, while a nurse practitioner or equivalent often runs walk-in clinics, urgent care centers always have at least one board-certified physician on staff. With the added expertise on-site, urgent care clinics can provide a broader and more specialized range of services than walk-in clinics.

Factors That Affect Duration of a Sunburn

A number of factors might affect how long your sunburn symptoms last. Not everyone reacts the same way to sun exposure.

In general, the following factors make people more susceptible to severe sunburns that generally take longer to heal:
- Fair or light skin.
- Freckles or red or fair hair.
- Exposure to sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. (when the sun's rays are most intense).
- High altitudes.
- Ozone holes.
- Living or visiting places near the equator.
- Tanning beds.
- Certain drugs that make you more susceptible to burns (photosensitizing medications).

Do More Severe Burns Last Longer?

How long a sunburn lasts depends on its severity.

Mild sunburns usually come with redness and some pain, which can last anywhere from three to five days. Your skin may also peel a bit toward the last couple of days as your skin regenerates.
Moderate sunburns are typically more painful. The skin will be red, swollen, and hot to the touch. Moderate sunburns typically take about a week to heal completely. The skin may then continue to peel for a few more days.
Severe sunburns sometimes require a visit to a doctor or even a hospital. You'll have painful blistering and very red skin. It can take up to two weeks to fully recover.

How Does Bug Bites Occur?

Most insect bites are harmless, though they sometimes cause discomfort. Bee, wasp, and hornet stings and fire ant bites usually hurt. Mosquito and flea bites usually itch. Insects can also spread diseases. In the United States, some mosquitoes spread West Nile virus. Travelers outside the United States may be at risk for malaria and other infections.

What Is the Purpose of a Tetanus Shot?

A tetanus shot is a vaccine that prevents a life-threatening bacterial infection called tetanus, also commonly known as lockjaw. This infection seriously affects your nervous system, causing painful seizure-like spasms that last for several minutes at a time. These spasms typically affect the jaw, neck, back, legs, arms, and hands and can cause difficulty breathing difficulties.

Children and adults need doses of the tetanus vaccine at varying times throughout their lives to protect them from contracting this condition.

How Often Do You Need to Get a Tetanus Shot?

Tetanus shots are administered at varying times throughout one's life to protect them from contracting the potentially life-threatening bacterial infection known as lockjaw (tetanus). While adults require a tetanus shot every 10 years, children require six doses throughout their development. This includes a shot at the following development marks:

- 2 months old.
- 4 months old.
- 6 months old.
- Between 15 and 18 months old.
- Between 4 and 6 years old.
- Between 11 and 12 years old.

Your doctor may also choose to give you an additional tetanus shot if you've received a deep puncture, wound, or bite that may have come into contact with dirt, soil, f***s, rust, or saliva. These boosters are especially recommended if you don't know your immunization history, if you got your last tetanus shot more than 10 years ago, or if you have had less than three tetanus shots in your lifetime.

What Is Dehydration?

Dehydration can happen when an individual begins to lose or use more fluids in the body, then the body does not have enough water or other fluids in it to continue carrying out normal body functions. If you cannot get enough lost fluids in your system fast enough, the body will become dehydrated. Dehydration can happen quickly and you won't know you are dehydrated until you are.

We have seen many become dehydrated, especially children and seniors, and can especially be dangerous for them. One of the most common causes of dehydration in babies and children and adults is severe diarrhea and vomiting. Adults do have a naturally lower volume of water in their bodies already and may have other pre-existing conditions or take medications that may increase the risk of dehydration.

How Does Dehydration Develop?

Dehydration develops when the body begins to lose more fluids than you can intake. Some of the more common causes of dehydration can be:

- Excessively sweating.
- Vomiting.
- Diarrhea.

If the body cannot maintain the fluids it needs to adequately function, the body will start to go into shock from dehydration. The shock can begin to lead other parts of the body to become affected including the organs, cells, and tissues which will begin to fail to function properly. This can also lead to even more dangerous complications if your dehydration is not medically treated immediately.
