Talking to your kids about impaired driving doesn’t have to wait for the “right time.” Start early. Set clear expectations. Help them build a plan—and remind them they can always call you.

These small conversations can make a big difference.

At Sunrise Treatment Center, we support individuals and families with addiction treatment and mental health services, helping people find the care they need—when they need it most.

🍹 Canned cocktails = convenient. But at what cost? 🤔

As alcohol becomes more accessible, the risk for misuse and harm increases. Staying informed matters.

🚨 Today is Alcohol Screening Day (April 9)! Take a minute to check in with yourself—it could make all the difference.

Alcohol Screening Day (NASD), established in 1999 by the NIAAA & SAMHSA, aims to:

1️⃣ Offer free, anonymous alcohol screenings
2️⃣ Provide treatment referrals for unhealthy drinking
3️⃣ Educate the public on alcohol’s impact on health

📍Testing locations: community centers, colleges, military installations, designated businesses, & online platforms. Online self-tests are also available!

At Sunrise Treatment Center, we offer addiction treatment + mental health support every step of the way. 💙

✨ Staff Spotlight: Erica Gundelfinger, Psychiatric NP ✨

We asked Erica about her work & what drives her—here’s what she had to say:

💬 Why is this work important?
“This work is important because people deserve to feel seen and not judged. Especially when they are struggling. I have worked with so many patients who felt written off or misunderstood, and that sticks with you. Mental health and addiction can take so much from someone; their confidence, relationships, sense of self, and I think it is incredibly important to be part of giving that back. Even small moments of connection or progress can mean everything.”

💬 What is your favorite part of this job?
“My favorite part is watching someone start to believe in themselves again. Sometimes it is small, like sleeping a little better or feeling a little less overwhelmed and sometimes it is big, like rebuilding relationships or finding joy again. Being part of someone’s journey from feeling stuck or broken to feeling empowered and hopeful is honestly an honor.”

💬 What do you wish more people understood about mental health or recovery?
“That it is not something you can just push through or “snap out of.” Most of the people I see have been pushing through for years and that is the problem. They have been strong for everyone else, ignoring their own needs, telling themselves it is not that bad, until it is. And even then, it does not always look like the stereotypical “falling apart.” Sometimes it just looks like being irritable, disconnected, overwhelmed, or just tired of feeling the same way every day. I wish more people understood that struggling does not mean you are weak, a lot of the time it means you have been holding too much for too long.”

💬 What advice would you give to someone starting their mental health journey?
“I would tell them that you do not have to have the right words for it yet. A lot of people wait until they can explain exactly what’s wrong or until things feel “bad enough,” but that moment doesn’t always come, or it comes way later than it should. If something feels off, if you are tired of feeling the way you have been feeling, that is enough. You can show up unsure, guarded, even a little resistant, and still get something out of it. You don’t have to fully trust the process yet; you just have to be willing to take that first step and figure it out as you go.”

💬 Favorite way to practice self-care?
“Self-care for me is about finding moments of peace in everyday life. Sometimes that looks like uninterrupted time with my kids or family, sometimes it is music or a TV series I have seen one hundred times, getting outside, or just unplugging from everything for a bit. It does not have to be fancy, it is about doing something that lets me breathe, recharge, and come back a little more grounded.”

✨ Staff Spotlight: Amanda Martin, Metal Health Therapist ✨

We asked Amanda a few questions about her work and what drives her—here’s what she had to say:

💬 Why is this work important?
“This work is important to me because people are often looked down upon due to the stigma of mental health that we still struggle with today. I want to help normalize asking for help and helping people through tough times so that they are able to be the best version of themselves.”

💬 What do you wish more people understood about mental health or recovery?
“What I wish more people understood about mental health and recovery is that its not a choice to have these struggles. Mental health concerns and addiction are areas of individuals lives that can be helped with medication and counseling just as medical conditions can be treated with medication. The societal stigma attached to mental health and addiction is why many individuals do not reach out for help. We, as a community, need to work on breaking the stigma.”

💬 What advice would you give to someone starting their recovery journey?
“The advice that I would give someone who is starting their recovery journey is to remember that you are loved and cared for. You are not your addiction and you can find the help you need. Progress is always better than perfection when it comes to recovery.”

💬 Favorite way to practice self-care?
“My favorite way to practice self care is by reading my books and spending time with my daughter.”

💬 What is your favorite part of this job?
“My favorite part of my job is when someone tells me that I have made a difference in their life. When someone tells me that they were able to implement skills that we have practiced, I feel fulfillment in my job.”

💚 At the heart of it all:
Breaking stigma, building connection, and helping people become the best version of themselves.

✨ Staff Spotlight: Shana Koslow ✨

We asked Shana a few questions about her work and what drives her—here’s what she had to say:

💬 Why is this work important?
“Mental health work is important because it touches every aspect of a person’s life. It impacts how they think, feel, and relate to others and their daily ability to function. Supporting someone’s mental health improves their overall well-being and helps to strengthen one’s family system and their foundation. Mental health is invaluable, as is someone’s ability to feel seen, heard and understood. It can truly be live-changing and sometimes lifesaving.”

💬 What do you wish more people understood about mental health or recovery?
“The understanding that mental health is not having a sign of weakness or inability to handle life alone. It looks different for every human being. Healing, within the realm of mental health or recovery, looks different for every single person and has many ebbs and flows as we navigate through life. Recovery isn’t about being 'perfect' or 'getting back on track' to never struggle again. It allows one to find their resilience, develop healthier coping skills and the opportunity to create a life they can manage and is full of meaning.”

💬 What advice would you give to someone starting their recovery journey?
“I encourage everyone to begin now, wherever you are currently, and try not to wait until you think 'it’s bad enough.' Having a conversation with a friend or loved one or reaching out to a provider can seem difficult but can often end up being the most powerful. We all deserve the opportunity to have support whenever it is needed.”

💬 Favorite way to practice self-care?
“For self-care, I enjoy spending time with my dog, doing anything outdoors like hiking, biking, kayaking, and gardening, and spending time with my family and friends.”

💬 What is your favorite part of this job?
“My favorite part of this role is making meaningful connections with individuals, and allowing them the space to feel seen, heard and understood. When someone can incorporate the interventions from their sessions into their life, that allows them to live more freely and be reminded of their strength and resilience daily. It is heartwarming for me when someone can be vulnerable and allow themselves the opportunity to heal and find their inner peace.”
