“We all have challenges in life.” – Nolan Blackard, a young, talented college sophomore and RJ Rosenberg patient.

Nolan was born without the lower part of his left arm. His positive attitude shines in everything he tackles (pun intended)! He attended Fernandina Beach Florida HS and played football. He is on the roster at Southeastern University in Lakeland and this week he visited RJ Rosenberg Orthopedic for a new prosthesis.

RJR Clinical Director Ryan Spill, CP, has worked with Nolan for several years on his prosthetic care. This week Ryan fit him with new myoelectric arm featuring a new activity-specific terminal device for football. Nolan will use the new Ability Hand during football practice and in games. The Ability Hand™ by PSYONIC is a bionic prosthetic hand that replicates touch sensation for amputees and persons with limb deficiencies. It is the fastest bionic hand on the market and the only one with touch feedback. The hand uses pressure sensors to mimic the sensation of touch through vibrations. Ryan fit the MC ProWrist from Fillauer with increased speed and torque for PSYONIC Hands.

It’s World Emoji Day, a day the amputee community can celebrate too thanks to Apple back in 2018. Seven years ago, Apple released emojis that are inclusive to those with limb loss and limb difference, including an emoji of a man and women in a wheelchair, a prosthetic arm, and a prosthetic leg.

The K level is a rating from 0 to 4 that is used to predict your potential success with your prosthesis. It may change over time as you improve in your ability to wear and use the prosthesis.

The different K Levels are:

K0 Level: Unable to use a prosthesis with or without assistance. A prosthesis does not enhance quality of life or mobility.
K1 Level: Has the ability or potential to use a prosthesis on level surfaces at fixed walking speeds.
K2 Level: Has the ability or potential to use a prothesis during walking and on low-level environmental barriers such as curbs, stairs, or uneven surfaces.
K3 Level: Has the ability or potential to use a prosthesis on most environmental barriers and during activity beyond simple walking.
K4 Level: Has the ability or potential to use a prosthesis during high impact exercise, stress, or energy levels. This is the level exhibited by children, active adults, and athletes.

This month is Parks & Recreation Month, and now is the time to get out and enjoy the summer weather! Smale Riverfront Park is a great place to enjoy nature while in the middle of Cincinnati.
