Truedefense is the product of over 38 years of experience with various self-defense systems including many Asian martial arts and modern combative systems. We teach truth, practicality, and enjoyment in learning how to survive the fight you did not ask for, and how to fight the battles that are part of our daily lives.
“It all began in 1980 when friends of mine started showing me martial arts moves at camp. I was hoping to learn something to help me win a fight,” admits Paul Korchak. “Through training in multiple martial arts with the top instructors and coaches in the world, I learned many various techniques, yet still wondered if I was learning the best tools to first avoid fights, and if I did have a fight, overcome it.”
Paul continually searched for the truest and most effective techniques for self-defense, and had great success in competition, coaching, and teaching. He started his own martial art school in 1988 and Cincinnati Taekwondo Center became the largest of it’s kind in Ohio. In 2013, Paul felt called to begin focusing on teaching the benefits of personal defense and personal development that he had been teaching for over 35 years, in a new format that was truer to his Christian faith, truer to developing the most vital skills, and truer to our culture’s current hectic lifestyle.
We would like to introduce you to truedefense, a new and better way for students to learn personal defense and experience personal growth.
Six years ago I began to reconstruct martial art education into a new package. Taking my years of teaching martial art and self-defense to instructors from around the world, as well as my education in sport sciences, developmental psychology, learning theory, and certification in the Alexander Technique, I believe I have the most beneficial program for students of all ages.
Students will learn in the most efficient manner. Our culture is increasingly ‘over-scheduled’, and we respect the value of our student’s time. Our programs are structured to prioritize on what to focus on first, so that students leave with most useful skills, whether they are taking a one-time seminar or on-going classes. Our focus is on practical self-defense and it’s practice to improve quality of life.
Students will become tougher mentally, physically, and emotionally so that they can overcome the battles life brings them. The program trains students to become more resilient through working on difficult, safe drills that progressively become more challenging.
Becoming tough is not the whole picture, as violence is rarely the answer. We approach students as whole persons and put personal defense in context with the rest of their life, teaching problem solving above kicks and punches. Truedefense students will learn the context of fighting back in life and how to become stronger, while having a balance of compassion and cooperation with others.
Overcoming Fear: Besides wanting to learn a skill and have a great time working out with others in class, students seek a self-defense class to ultimately deal with fear. Fear of not being able to survive an attack, fear of not controlling one’s anger, and fear of not making good decisions to stay out of trouble. This verse from scripture expresses what we embody in our teaching: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (II Timothy 1:7) Truedefense’s logo is a shield. Something else we learn from scripture is that above all, the ultimate protection is the shield of faith.
Learning and teaching how to discern the truth of ourselves, others, and the world around us is our mission. Too often we talk ourselves into stuff out of convenience or enjoyment, yet we know it to be impractical or unhelpful. If it is not true we throw it out!
