Dear Open Heart Surgery,
More so Congenital Heart Disease,

You’re like a bad tattoo, reminding us that our babies will always have a target on their backs.
You’re a calendar countdown to the worst day of our lives.
You’re like a soulmate, but instead of love you rob us of joy & peace.

It’s like you get a thrill from seeing me countdown the days until March 5th.
With silent tears, choking back screams, and wondering if I’ll ever get to be a mommy again.

“Will I ever hold my baby again, after March 5th?”

Will we still play dress up, or do I have to pick out your viewing & burial dress?
Will I still get to kiss your face & say our prayers before bed, or do I have to do that alone now?
Will we still sing our heart out to In The Morning Light by Billy Strings, or is that album haunted by your ghost?

It’s sickening.
To think I was just planning a babyshower and nursery themes.
Now? I’m forced to imagine a life without you.

Your bright eyes, contagious laugh, gummy smile, and 3 strands of hair I forced into a bow.
I don’t want this life without you. So we’ll soak up the memories & go places you never been, in this last week of the unknowing.
I love you more than life itself Laramie Rose.
Everyone does.

All comfy cozy in our room💗
We’re back on feeds with NO concerns of her GJ tube twisting, thank you Jesus !!!
And came off high-flow, down to 3L of o2, with a consideration of CathLab but nothing set in stone since Open Heart is so soon.

Praying we only need a blood transfusion and we can go back home longer than 3 days🙌🏽

✨Life outside of the hospital with a ‘sick’ baby✨

Which may be a controversial topic, but I love being asked about her. Obviously in a respectful manner.
“What are the tubes in her belly for?”
“What is the oxygen tank for?”
“Can I ask her diagnosis?”

Yes. Please.
Please ask questions, be curious, let your kids see you caring for kids like mine.
Teach them that my daughter’s differences doesn’t make her less, just unique.

Our first trip outside of the hospital walls & I was able to tell 7 people about Congenital Heart Defects. And those 7 people could tell 7 more each, that’s 49 people. And so on.
I can’t speak for all Heart Moms, but I know a lot who just want their babies involved and talked about- not just stared at with pity.

One advocation, one person at a time, and we will have more research & cures for CHD. 🫀🎗️
