Why do we need to know your insurance plan prior to starting services?
-One of the most common reasons that people in the US leave therapy is due to not understanding the cost of services. To help alleviate this, we always run a benefits check prior to reaching out for scheduling so that you know the terms of the plan before ever getting scheduled!
Unfortunately, we still encounter times when the cost of services on a deductible plan comes with sticker shock due to not understanding the terms of your plan.
Here are some helpful tips to know when starting therapy:
🤩When our lovely Tiffany calls to get you scheduled/assigned, she will let you know the type of plan you have for mental health services, whether it is a deductible, or copay plan. She will tell you the deductible amount you have obtained, as well as the amount you have to reach so you know where you stand!
📌DEDUCTIBLE: You have to pay the amount listed out of pocket as your deductible BEFORE your insurance will share in the cost burden.
📌Example: If your insurance card shows $2000 deductible, you pay $2000 out of pocket before your plan will help you with the cost. You will pay a rate that your plan negotiated. So we might say, "You have a deductible plan with a $2000 deductible. Sessions will cost $100/per session".
📌COPAY: Your plan shares the burden of costs for services, even while having a deductible
📌Example: We tell you that you have a $2000 deductible, but your plan allows a $25 copay while working towards that deductible. We might say, "You have a copay plan with a $2000 deductible. Sessions will cost $100/session, of which you will be responsible for $25".
Other notes and reasons why we encourage you to call us or have the discussion regarding the cost of services:
💜Our goal is to help you find the best services, even if that's not with us.
💜If services are too expensive, we sometimes have spots open for greatly reduced cost sessions, or can send you somewhere that does!
💜 Please do not ignore billing when they reach out to discuss the amount owed. Ignoring billing doesn't notify us of a hardship, or inability to pay, or a plan to pay. It just results in continued efforts to reach you to discuss your bill.
💜We truly will work with you to get you the services you need, but also create boundaries to ensure our providers are able to earn a fair income.
‼️We know discussions regarding financials or money in general is a hard conversation for many people. We hope to establish safety and healthy conversations surrounding our billing practices by being upfront, honest, and in your corner.
