I’ve learned real quick when I hear
“I can’t do this anymore,”
we’re usually minutes away from meeting baby. 👶🏽

That phrase often shows up during transition (when the cervix is almost fully dilated), contractions are strongest, and hormones are at their peak.

It’s a normal part of labor and a powerful reminder that the hardest part often comes right before the breakthrough.

🖤❤️💚 Happy Juneteenth from Yetu Village 💚❤️🖤

Today we honor freedom delayed but never denied. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance, it’s a celebration of Black resilience, joy, and liberation.

At Yetu Village, we believe birth is revolutionary. Every child born in love, every parent empowered in their choices, every sacred moment reclaimed is a step toward freedom.

We stand in deep reverence for the ancestors who dreamed of a future where our bodies, births, and babies would be safe and sovereign. We are their wildest dreams come true.

✨ May we rest.
✨ May we remember.
✨ May we reclaim.
✨ May we rise.

I know it’s a late post, but I couldn’t let the day go by without acknowledging it — Happy International Home Birth Day! 🏡🧡✨ Today is a day to celebrate the beauty, power, and sacredness of birth at home.

I had the honor of attending two beautiful births today. The first was a surrogacy birth — an incredible act of love and selflessness. While we don’t have permission to share photos from that journey, just know it was magical.

The second birth — pictured here with permission — was just as breathtaking. A strong, radiant family welcoming new life into their sacred space, surrounded by peace, trust, and support. 💫🫶🏾

Home birth is not just about location. It’s about reclaiming power. It’s about choosing presence, safety, and autonomy. It’s about trusting the process, the body, and the birthing person.

To all the families who’ve birthed at home, to the midwives walking with them, and to those dreaming of this path — you are seen, loved, and celebrated today and always. 💕

🌿 Let’s Talk: 37 Weeks vs. 39 Weeks – What Does “Full Term” Really Mean? 🌿

You may have heard that 37 weeks is “full term” but did you know that not all full terms are created equal?

👶🏽 37–38 weeks is now called “Early Term”
👶🏾 39–40 weeks is considered “Full Term”
👶🏿 41 weeks is “Late Term”

Why does this matter? Because while babies can be born healthy at 37 or 38 weeks, research shows that babies born at 39–40 weeks tend to have fewer breathing problems, better feeding, and are less likely to need NICU care.

Your baby’s brain and lungs are still developing in those final weeks, so unless there’s a medical reason to deliver earlier, those last few weeks really matter. 🧠💖

✨ Growing a whole human takes time. Let’s honor that process.

Understanding the Prenatal Visit Schedule in Midwifery Care

In midwifery care, we take our time. Each visit is a chance to build trust, deepen connection, and honor the rhythm of your pregnancy, not just check a box.

So why do prenatal appointments start every 4 weeks, then shift to every 2 weeks, and finally once a week?

Here’s what that rhythm supports:

Up to 28 Weeks — Every 4 Weeks
In early pregnancy, we’re monitoring your overall wellness, nutrition, emotional well-being, baby’s growth, and how you’re adjusting to this season. Appointments are more spaced out because change is slower and risks are generally low.

28–36 Weeks — Every 2 Weeks
As baby grows and your body adapts, we check in more often. This is when things can shift more quickly (your blood pressure, baby’s position, iron levels, or swelling). Seeing you more regularly helps us catch subtle changes before they become concerns.

36 Weeks to Birth — Weekly
Now we’re entering the home stretch. Weekly visits help us prepare together for birth, discuss your preferences, and ensure both you and baby are thriving. We focus on your mental readiness, support systems, and signs that labor may be near without routine cervical checks, because we know your body is not a clock. We trust it to do what it was made to do.

These visits are about you, not just your charts. The increase in frequency is about support, safety, and connection. This is care that sees you.

Your body. Your baby. Your birth. Your village.

Earlier this month, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland reintroduced the MIDWIVES for Servicemembers Act—a bipartisan bill that would expand TRICARE to cover all credentialed midwives, including Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) and Certified Midwives (CMs).

This means more access to safe, community-based, midwifery care for servicemembers and their families—no matter where duty takes them.

Midwifery care =
✔️ Lower rates of unnecessary interventions
✔️ Better outcomes for parents and babies
✔️ Higher satisfaction with care
✔️ Lower costs to the system

ACPM is proud to endorse this bill and stand alongside our partners in advocating for expanded access to midwifery-led care.

At Yetu Village, every birthing story matters.

We honor the full spectrum of birth, the joyful beginnings, the complex journeys, and the tender moments of loss. We’ve had the privilege of walking beside families through all stages of pregnancy, including those who’ve experienced unimaginable grief.

We believe that holding space for these stories creates room for healing, truth-telling, and transformation.

Nasii Rivera Spence, our midwife and founder who Is also a board member of Our Birthing Stories, continues to amplify the voices of families impacted by pregnancy and infant loss. Her commitment is deeply personal and grounded in community care.

We invite you to watch this powerful NewsChannel 5 segment, where Our Birthing Stories founder Dr. LaRhonda McLemore-Cockrel shares her own experience of loss and the purpose that emerged from her pain:

Happy International Day of the Midwife

Today we celebrate midwives around the world who show up with skilled hands, fierce love, and deep reverence for birth. From busy hospitals to quiet home births, midwives protect the sacred and powerful process of bringing life earthside.

We especially honor the legacy of the grand midwives, the Black women in the South who caught generations of babies with wisdom passed down through oral tradition, prayer, and community trust. Their work was spiritual, political, and deeply rooted in liberation. At Yetu Village, we walk in their footsteps.

Midwifery is more than a profession. It is a calling. A commitment. A global sisterhood.

Birth is powerful. So are midwives.
