Understanding the Prenatal Visit Schedule in Midwifery Care
In midwifery care, we take our time. Each visit is a chance to build trust, deepen connection, and honor the rhythm of your pregnancy, not just check a box.
So why do prenatal appointments start every 4 weeks, then shift to every 2 weeks, and finally once a week?
Here’s what that rhythm supports:
Up to 28 Weeks — Every 4 Weeks
In early pregnancy, we’re monitoring your overall wellness, nutrition, emotional well-being, baby’s growth, and how you’re adjusting to this season. Appointments are more spaced out because change is slower and risks are generally low.
28–36 Weeks — Every 2 Weeks
As baby grows and your body adapts, we check in more often. This is when things can shift more quickly (your blood pressure, baby’s position, iron levels, or swelling). Seeing you more regularly helps us catch subtle changes before they become concerns.
36 Weeks to Birth — Weekly
Now we’re entering the home stretch. Weekly visits help us prepare together for birth, discuss your preferences, and ensure both you and baby are thriving. We focus on your mental readiness, support systems, and signs that labor may be near without routine cervical checks, because we know your body is not a clock. We trust it to do what it was made to do.
These visits are about you, not just your charts. The increase in frequency is about support, safety, and connection. This is care that sees you.
Your body. Your baby. Your birth. Your village.
