Sometimes bodywork photos look AMAZING. Big topline lift, posture changes, muscles popping back online.
And sometimes… they look worse. 😅

That doesn’t mean the session failed. It usually means the horse finally let go.

When tight, protective muscles release, the body can temporarily “drop” into patterns it’s been holding against for months (or years). The brace is gone, but the strength hasn’t caught up yet. Think of it like taking a cast off a weak arm — it doesn’t instantly look strong, it looks different first.

This phase is where the real work starts. Movement, correct training, proper saddle fit, and consistent care are what rebuild the support system around that new freedom.

So don’t panic if the after photo isn’t picture-perfect. Sometimes messy is progress. Sometimes softer is better. Sometimes “worse” is actually the first honest posture your horse has shown in a long time.

Trust the process. The body knows what it’s doing.

Head setting devices don’t just affect the head… they affect the whole body 🐎

When the head and neck are mechanically placed, the body often responds with compensation instead of real strength. I see a lot of horses bracing the underside of the neck, hollowing the back, tightening the psoas and SI, and shortening stride — even if the frame looks “pretty.”

There’s also a nervous system piece. Constant pressure keeps many horses in a low-grade fight or flight state, which shows up as tension, resistance, slower recovery, and uneven muscle development.

If a horse can only move correctly with the device on, that ’s a red flag. The body doesn’t actually have the strength or mobility to support that posture yet.

True head carriage comes from core engagement, topline strength, balance, and relaxation — not straps.

Cold weather doesn’t just make horses stiff… it changes how their whole body works 🥶🐎

When temps drop, horses drink less, muscles guard, fascia tightens, and the nervous system stays more “on.” That’s why winter often brings tight backs, shorter stride, cranky behavior, and poor hind end engagement.

Cold stress also raises ulcer risk. And gut discomfort doesn’t stay in the gut — it shows up as psoas tension, back pain, attitude changes, and resistance under saddle.

Neuro horses and older horses feel winter harder due to reduced circulation and increased immune stress.

What helps? Hydration is huge. Warm water, salt, soaked feeds. Keep forage available. Maintain daily movement. Use longer warm ups. Blanket with purpose. And don’t skip bodywork — winter is when tension builds the fastest.

If your horse feels “off,” it’s probably not an attitude problem. It’s a cold-weather body problem.

Support the system, not just the symptoms.

If your horse is tight, sore, or stiff… don’t just blame their muscles. Look at their GUT.

You’d be shocked how many “back issues” actually start in the digestive system. When the gut is irritated, the diaphragm tightens, the fascia loses elasticity, and the whole body goes into protection mode. That’s when you see tight backs, girthiness, underneck building instead of topline, and that short, choppy stride that never quite warms out.

The gut and musculoskeletal system are connected more than people realize.
Fix the gut and the body finally lets go.
Muscles soften. Movement improves. The topline comes back. The brain calms down.

🐴✨ Are Correctional Half Pads Helping or Harming Your Horse?

Correctional half pads can be great tools — when they’re used for the right reasons. As an equine bodyworker, my goal is always long-term comfort, correct muscle development, and freedom of movement.

✔️ When They’re Helpful
• To support uneven shoulder or topline development
• During rehab or while rebuilding muscle
• When a horse is changing shape through training or seasons
• To improve saddle balance while the body strengthens
• For riders working on balance and stability

When used correctly, they can reduce pressure points, help the horse move more freely, and promote a healthier posture.

⚠️ When They Can Cause Problems
• If they’re used to mask poor saddle fit
• When the saddle becomes unstable or perched
• If they block shoulder movement
• When the horse develops new soreness in other areas
• If they become a permanent crutch instead of a temporary tool

Too much padding can lead to muscle loss, restricted motion, and compensations that undo your horse’s progress.

🧠 The Bodyworker Approach

A correctional pad should support a short-term goal—
not replace proper fit, training, and bodywork.

We assess:
✨ Muscle symmetry
✨ Saddle balance
✨ Movement quality
✨ Postural changes over time

When the body improves, the pad should be adjusted or removed.

Bottom Line

Used thoughtfully, correctional half pads help the horse move better while muscles develop. Used incorrectly, they can create the very issues they’re meant to solve.

✨ We wrapped up the final course of the year yesterday and wow, what a way to close out 2025! Both classes were absolutely incredible and so much fun. From seeing familiar faces (and a few awesome clients 😉) to meeting new friends and snagging some future interns for 2026… it couldn’t have ended on a better note!

Hosting courses for Superior Therapy is always such a rewarding experience. It keeps me sharp, challenges me to think outside the box even more, and reminds me why I love what I do.

Throughout the week, I witnessed so many lightbulb moments, minds expanding, confidence building, and that spark of excitement for what’s to come. It fired me up for what’s ahead in 2026!

Huge congratulations to our final 2025 course graduates!! I can’t wait to watch each of you grow and bloom in your careers and beyond. 🌱🎓

ANTERIOR VS POSTERIOR TILD IN PELVIS

•Anterior tilt to the pelvis means the pelvis is tilted forward, this causes the back to rise. It is caused by weak gluteal muscles and tight hip flexors and can result in lordosis!

-Posterior tilt is when the pelvis tilts backwards! This can be caused by tight hamstring and weak abdominal muscles.
