15 Minute Health

15 Minute Health We give people simple & effective ways to relieve their back pain. We created 15 Minute Back in collaboration with Rick Olderman.

Rick graduated from physical therapy school in 1996. After failing to help his patients adequately, he realized that standard physical therapy education left him unprepared to truly help people with chronic pain or nagging injuries. As a result Rick has spent the last 20+ years developing his pioneering approach. Shortly after Rick took over a small physical therapy clinic in Denver in 2012, business grew very rapidly due to word-of-mouth referrals and physicians seeing his rapid and lasting results for their most difficult patients. Body in Balance Physical Therapy has become the clinic to recover from painful injuries. He has trained all his therapists in his revolutionary approach to fixing pain and is sought out for help around the world. One of the driving forces behind Rick’s search for answers was his own chronic back pain which began before he attended school. Not finding the answers in PT school, Pilates, personal training or yoga, Rick realized a fundamental element connecting movement, structure and pain was missing from most disciplines. He has dedicated these past two decades to unravel the secrets about how the body works to create and eliminate pain. He has distilled his discoveries down to a very simple system anyone can follow. The key to his back, hip, knee, foot/ankle, and headache programs is a deep understanding of how poor movement habits break down muscles, tendons, ligaments and bone to create pain. Fixing these painful habits such walking, bending over, sitting, standing, or sleeping helps tissues heal and restores pain-free function by relieving excessive pressure on these tissues. Additionally Rick offers simple stretching, strengthening and taping recommendations for key muscles to speed recovery and heal damaged tissues. When Rick discovered that some people needed more direct guidance, he created his unique videos for people to follow along at home—a more streamlined approach to solving pain. Rick’s 15 - 30 minute routines will guide you through the exercises to fix your pain. His techniques put the power to heal your pain back into your hands and give rapid results. So much so that after each session, you are prompted to test your pain to see that it has reduced. No other program will give you faster and long-lasting results. Rick’s approach will help restore vitality, strength, and flexibility to your body. Most importantly, you will gain control of and eliminate pain—for good. Rick believes we all have the ability to solve our own pain and master our bodies given the right tools.

I love the first hour of the day. It's quiet. The coffee is delicious.

Can the same joy be found in the evening? Even after a hectic day?

I'm on a journey to find out. I'd like to find an awesome evening tea I can love just as much as that coffee.

Whenever I feel like skipping my exercise I think back to why I do it.

In order to do the things I love with the people I love, I need my body to work well.

No matter the goal -- getting stronger, staying fit, reducing pain -- it's worth the investment. They are worth the investment. I am worth the investment.

How do folks helps themselves wind down at night?

I'm collecting tips to share with our community.

Me? I'm reading an awesome book called The Fall of Hyperion. It's book 2 in a series and excellent, so far. The first, Hyperion, was amazing.

Afternoon energy boost?

I've tried tons of stuff.

The thing that works best?

A walk!

I wish it were sexier. When I'm dragging, the last thing I want to do is lug myself outside. Especially when I've got the baby in tow.

But afterward?

I can't deny it. I ALWAYS feel better.

And if I'm being honest, I'm finally starting to enjoy it. The park, the breeze, the local kids. There's so much beauty when I let myself see it.

Who's getting out to nature today?

If not, what are you doing instead to engage your body, brain & heart?

I'm heading to the farmers' market to get a special-treat latte and then snoop around for bone broth bones. There are usually a few options to get them surprisingly cheaply.

Don't forget about your core muscles!

Your lower back is under the stress of supporting your entire upper body. Surrounding muscles in your back need to be toned to support your spine and reduce pressure on your lower back.

Our core muscles are rarely used during everyday activities, so they need to be toned through specific, targeted exercises.

Take a few minutes each day to do a couple of simple core exercises. So you can have a nice "pillar" of support for your body.

They don't have to be intense, either :)

Simple ways to avoid triggering back pain at work:

Pay attention to posture. When standing, balance your weight evenly on your feet. Don't slouch. To promote good posture when sitting, choose a chair that supports your lower back. Adjust the height of your chair so that your feet rest flat on the floor or on a footrest and your thighs are parallel to the floor. Remove your wallet or cellphone from your back pocket when sitting to prevent putting extra pressure on your buttocks or lower back.

Lift properly. When lifting and carrying a heavy object, get close to the object, bend your knees and tighten your stomach muscles. Use your leg muscles to support your body as you stand up. Hold the object close to your body. Maintain the natural curve of your back. Don't twist when lifting. If an object is too heavy to lift safely, ask someone to help you.

Modify repetitive tasks. Use lifting devices, when available, to help you lift loads. Try to alternate physically demanding tasks with less demanding ones. If you work at a computer, make sure that your monitor, keyboard, mouse and chair are positioned properly. If you frequently talk on the phone and type or write at the same time, place your phone on speaker or use a headset. Avoid unnecessary bending, twisting and reaching. Limit the time you spend carrying heavy briefcases, purses and bags.

Listen to your body. If you must sit for a prolonged period, change your position often. Periodically walk around and gently stretch your muscles to relieve tension.

The Mayo Clinic reports these common causes of back pain at work.

Watch out for them!

Force. Exerting too much force on your back — such as by lifting or moving heavy objects — can cause injury.

Repetition. Repeating certain movements, especially those that involve twisting or rotating your spine, can injure your back.

Inactivity. An inactive job or a desk job can contribute to back pain, especially if you have poor posture or sit all day in a chair with inadequate back support.

Back pain + sleep:

In one survey I saw, 37% of adults said back pain affected their ability to get good sleep.

When my back pain strikes, that sure is the case for me. It's one of my big motivators to make sure I get (and keep) my situation handled.

What's on the menu for dinner tonight?

I've got carnitas tacos with grain-free tortillas and a simple green salad. I try to eat at least one simple green salad every day to make sure I get all those green nutrients in.

I'm testing out a belize hot sauce vs a korean one. I may be a simple man, but it's fun for me.

It's so important to get the right nutrients for our bodies.

One great option?

- organic, pastured eggs cooked your favorite way

- nitrate- & nitrite-free bacon (I prefer baking it over frying it)

- any organic fruites & vegetables raw or cooked

Once you plate it, drizzle a little olive oil over it.

A delicious & easy way to fuel up for the day! :)

What's your favorite breakfast recipe?

It's important to stay active year-round. And not just physically, but also mentally.

Right now, I'm staying mentally active by learning about Indian cooking. It's fun and... delicious. If you want to learn with me, I recommend Dishoom.

How do you enjoy keeping active physically and mentally?
