Inflation, recession, tariffs, wars, dismantling government agencies…all this uncertainty eats away at working caregivers. Almost a decade ago, AARP research group estimated that caregivers spend on average, $7,000 out of their own pocket on a loved one’s care. That was before COVID. Let that sink in.
Honestly, today’s caregivers can’t afford a piggy bank. They are living on robbing retirement accounts, credit card debt, line of credit, and/or multiple mortgages on the only solid(?) asset they possess.
We need a federal caregiver tax credit like the child tax credit. Pass the act SB925 and H2036.

In 2023 alone, Alzheimer’s caregivers provided 18.4 billion hours of unpaid care—valued at nearly $350 billion. Dementia caregivers face even greater financial strain, spending over $10,000 per year out of pocket. Many families are forced to cut back on savings, everyday expenses, and even food.

The bipartisan Credit for Caring Act will provide up to a $5,000 federal tax credit for eligible family caregivers, helping to ease the crushing financial burden. Caregivers shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own well-being to care for a loved one.

There are over 50 million American unpaid family caregivers struggling to care for disabled and elder family and friends. We need the Credit for Caring tax credit to help us continue to afford to care for our loved ones. SB 925 has been presented by Senators Capito and Bennet. I am asking for your powerful voice and vote to get us this tax credit as suffer through cuts to Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare.

Across the nation, 53 million family caregivers provide essential care for loved ones, often at great personal and financial sacrifice. They are the backbone of our long-term care system, yet they receive little financial relief. The Credit for Caring Act would change that by offering a $5,000 tax credit to help offset caregiving expenses like home care, respite services, and medical supplies.
