At 54, former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies looks as fit and agile as she did in her competitive heyday.

So it comes as a surprise when she reveals she is in need of a right knee replacement after being diagnosed with uni-compartmental osteoarthritis in 2012.

The condition occurs when the cartilage of the knee is worn down and does not protect the bones.

As a result, most osteoarthritis sufferers experience severe pain because of increased pressure on the underlying bone and are recommended to have a knee replacement.

Incredibly, Sharron has been able to avoid surgery for five years so far, thanks to an unloading brace – a lightweight, non-surgical treatment option for the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Sharron believes the brace has transformed her life and is keen for people to be more aware of their options if they are told they need a knee replacement.

“At the moment it’s delaying having a knee replacement and stopping me from having any pain,” she says.

When surveyed on the advantages of ultrasound guided procedures, patients and clinicians gave this feedback:

Doesn't cause ionizing (no cancer risk)

Less expensive than invasive procedures

Real-time information (no waiting)

Overall satisfaction of 9.2/10 when ultrasound guided procedures are used

76% of patients surveyed felt that having real time images in front of them increased their confidence in the procedure

Here is a piece of our recent email regarding a study comparing US guidance to flouro and landmark:

After applying appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria, 9 studies were ultimately left standing. These studies reviewed 431 injections. US-guided and landmark guided injection accuracy were compared.

The weighted mean accuracy for US-guided injections in their statistical model was 100%, compared to 72% in the landmark guided injection group (even when patients underwent a general anesthetic for a landmark guided procedure which is clearly impractical and carries further risks and costs).

The least accurate landmark method was the lateral approach, with an anterior approach being the most accurate. Landmark guided injections were found in a few studies to be even more inaccurate in those with a high BMI or osteoarthritis – which accounts for a large proportion of people receiving hip joint injections.

Compared to Flouro, Ultrasound appears to be just as accurate, less expensive and has no radiation exposure.
