Knowing exactly where your septic system is located isn't just a fun fact—it can be vital for protecting your property. Coty & Brian were out yesterday helping a homeowner get their system sorted, and it’s the perfect time to share some "Golden Rules" for your backyard:
🚫 🛠️DO NOT build over it:
It might be tempting to put that new deck or patio in the sunniest spot, but if it’s over your tank, you’re looking at a nightmare. If we can't access the tank for maintenance or emergencies, those expensive pavers or boards will have to come up.
🚫🚗 DO NOT Drive Over It: Never park or drive heavy vehicles over your tank or drain field. The weight can crush pipes, compact the soil impacting absorption rate, and collapse the tank lids.
🚫🌳DO NOT Plant Over It:
While grass is fine, avoid trees and large shrubs! Roots are naturally drawn to the moisture and nutrients associated with your system . They can grow into the lines, causing massive clogs and even cracking your tank.
✅ Install Risers: Think of a riser as a "window" to your tank. They bring the tank lid up to ground level, which means:
•Easier Pumping: No more "search and rescue" digging sessions when it’s time for maintenance.
•Visual Reminder: They serve as a permanent marker so you (and any contractors) always know exactly where the "no-go" zone is. Having that lid visible serves as a constant reminder. When you see it while mowing the lawn, it prompts you to ask: "When was the last time I had this pumped?" Regular maintenance is easy to forget when it's buried!
Don't wait for a backup to start looking for your tank!
