In celebration of Black History Month, we wanted to highlight more incredible Black Americans in the LGBTQ community.
This week I am giving you Author James Baldwin (1924-1987). James was a writer and social critic, he is well known for his 1955 collection of essays, "Notes of a Native Son" and his 1956 novel "Giovanni's Room" which was written well before the gay liberation movement. He spent most of his career educating others about black and q***r identity.
I also would like to talk about Audre Lorde (1934-1992). She was a self-described "Black, Le***an, Feminist, Mother, Poet and Warrior". Her writings such as "Coal" in 1976, "The Black Unicorn" 1978 are only two of her most memorable works which goes through topics of critical race studies and q***r theory.

The MetroHealth Pride Alliance, with the help of MetroHealth Pride Network, delivered a check for $270 dollars in donations and a large package of art supplies to the kid's program at Colors+ Youth Center Park. Colors+ is a non-profit that provides safe space for LGBTQ and gender non-conforming young people. Events include art nights, movie nights, game nights, including Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. Event's are driven by kids. They also have parent's support and networking groups.
Colors+ Youth Center is a valuable part of the local LGBTQ+ community, and we're glad to be able to work with them.

Today February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS awareness day, an observance established to increase awareness in HIV among Black/African American people. According to the CDC in 2019 Black/African American's accounted for 41% of the estimated 34,800 HIV infections in the US and dependent areas. Even though Black/African American's represent only 12% of the US population. There are so many resources available, let's educate ourselves and get tested!

We celebrate Native American Heritage the month of November and especially today as it is Native American Heritage Day. Our country is made up of so many beautiful tribes including several in our state of Ohio such as Shawnee, Delaware, Wyandot People, Iroquois, Seneca, Chippewa and the Cayuga People and many more. Native American's honor their culture and their people in ways that celebrate who they are and how unique their beliefs are on daily basis throughout the year.
