In this fascinating article, Brooks notes that "drawing is both a means of communication as well as a problem-solving tool. Through drawing children are not only able to see what they are thinking, they are also able to play around with and transform their ideas" (p. 319).

In this way, drawings are part of a learning process rather than a learning product. Thus, ny one drawing should not be taken as an indicator of a child's stage of development.

The benefits of drawing for students with visual impairment are many. They include improved fine motor skills and creativity and a better understanding of spatial and symbolic relationships. This improved sense of spatial relationships is of great value in learning to effectively use tactile graphics.
