Mitsui Collective

Mitsui Collective Cultivating pathways to Jewish embodiment to catalyze a better future for all. Home of The Mitsui Institute for Jewish Embodiment & Studio Mitsui.

Mitsui Collective builds resilient community through embodied Jewish practice and somatic antiracism. We envision vibrant, resilient, and diverse Jewish communities that model personal, social, and environmental well-being through embodied spiritual practice based in liberatory anti-oppression theory and praxis. Mitsui (מיצוי - Aramaic): Activation of Potential

Mitsui Collective is a place-based community of practice centered around collective needs for physical and spiritual wellness, social connection, and nature connection. Grounded in Jewish ethics, traditions, and embodied practices, it is fundamentally open to any and all spiritual seekers. Mitsui strongly prioritizes centering community around those historically placed at the margins of North American Jewish life, including but not limited to Jews of Color and other non-Ashkenormative Jews, LGBTQ, interfaith / intergroup families, and those of varied socioeconomic status. We view diversity and representation not just as a checkbox but as a vital building block for vibrant, resilient community.

A real honor to lead an embodied Jewish resilience workshop today in tandem with the incredibly powerful Broken Seder art installation experience at the — kol hakavod to all involved for creating this profoundly moving multi sensory experience, and gratitude for the opportunity for us to be involved!

And all the more so a real treat to collaborate and get into practice with some dear friends and colleagues.

Yoshi is in the Bay Area through Tuesday - be sure to check out our Interwoven Oppressions antisemitism x racism research presentation with Tuesday evening!

In case you hadn't noticed, antisemitism is a big problem.

Most approaches to combatting antisemitism emphasize teaching *other people* how to not be antisemitic — which is obviously important, but doesn't help those of us on the receiving end of antisemitism to navigate its harmful impacts *right now*

That's where we come in.

Our approach to embodiment builds the skills and internal capacity to be more resilient, effective, and capable *in response* to antisemitism, whether we're encountering it on the street, in our news feeds, or in our broader community spaces.

Sound helpful?

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, you're in luck!**

We're coming your way with two special pre-Passover programs to build our skills and resourcing for stronger and more resilient Jewish communities in the face of antisemitism and other vectors of oppression:

1 — Embodied Jewish resilience workshop with the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco — April 6th, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm (sliding scale reg fee, additional support available)

2 — Interactive presentation of our Interwoven Oppressions research on the embodied impacts of racism and antisemitism on Jews of Color at Urban Adamah — April 8th, 7-9 pm (free to attend!)

[registration links to both events in comments]

We also have a couple spots still available to present our research or run a Jewish embodiment program for staff and/or stakeholder specific groups if your org or community would be interested. Get in touch!

**Not located in the Bay but interested in what we offer? Let's talk.

At the end of yet another challenging year within the Jewish community and beyond, we're so grateful to continue doing the work we love and to hear from those we've worked with how valuable the work of Jewish embodiment has been in supporting them to move through the world with strength, care, and compassion.

As shared by a participant in our new Foundations series: "Mitsui Collective is at the intersection of the body, Judaism, and social justice in a way I have never seen before. It provides a space for depth of exploration and truth without judgment or impatience."

We’ve spent much of the past year deep in strategic visioning and planning, and we have a bold vision coming together for the next iteration of Mitsui Collective’s work that we plan to share early in the New Year … stay tuned!

In the meantime, here are our highlights from 2023. We're proud of what we've accomplished and so excited for what's to come.

We hope you'll make an end-of-year contribution if you agree that we need this work to keep growing. Your support is critical, and we appreciate any and all contributions.

In so many ways these past two months, our communities have been stretched to the breaking point. And that’s on top of everything else from the past several years. These are not easy times we live in.

But then, the deepest wellsprings of Jewish wisdom tend to come from times of tumult, turmoil, and transition. Hanukkah is no different.

We first curated Reflecting Resilience — An Embodied Guide to Hanukkah two years ago. In the introduction, we wrote: "If there has ever been a time for resilience, these last several years have been that time. This is by no means the first time our people have needed or expressed resiliency — in fact, it's one of the core themes weaving throughout the Hanukkah holiday: how do we hold onto our inner core, a strong yet supple spine and thick skin to protect us, while maintaining an open and caring heart?"

We could have written that paragraph six years ago, six weeks ago, or six days ago and it would be just as relevant. We hope that means that the guide is just as helpful this year as any year prior. The guide is designed to accompany whatever your other Hanukkah practices may be — from lighting candles to giving gifts to cooking delicious oily foods — or could also stand on its own. We invite you to play and explore and see what sticks.

Each night, we will be posting the relevant practices on Instagram. The full Hanukkah guide can be downloaded here: https://mitsuicollective.org/embodied-hanukkah-guide/

Our Story

Mitsui Collective builds resilient community through embodied Jewish practice. Core program areas include movement, wellness, and nature connection with an emphasis on equity-based multiracial community building and select programming specific to Jews of Color.

We are in a time of global uncertainty with climate change and ecological devastation layered upon ongoing systemic racism and the resurgence of fascism and anti-semitism. Social turmoil and injustice — symptoms of these root conflicts — are rising, and without counterbalance will lead to further isolationism, xenophobia, violence, and resource guarding.

Within the social sphere, people are experiencing greater feelings of personal isolation and fear of an unknown future. We have a sense that our communities have lost something, that they’re incomplete. On the personal level many of us feel a constant pressure towards self-improvement yet can’t help but feel like “self-care” is yet one more item on a to-do list that’s already too long. Similarly, we may “know” that spirituality is important but we lack the frameworks for activating and expressing that spirituality.

Jewish individuals and communities are hardly immune. Institutional affiliation continues to decline, while those who consider themselves “Jews of no religion” increase, as do the number of Jews exploring “alternative” spiritual practices. Whether explicitly or implicitly spiritual in nature, we are building community at places like CrossFit gyms, Yoga and SoulCycle studios, activist and social justice spaces, and through shared experiences of food and nature connection.
