Evidence-based practice means choosing treatments informed by solid research and tailored to each client’s needs. But how do you know which interventions are truly evidence-based—and how can you spot pseudoscientific practices?

On Wednesday September 10th, Portland DBT Institute is hosting Sarah Hope Lincoln, Ph.D. , Associate Professor at Northeastern University & psychologist at Center for Evidence Based Treatment,
for a FREE hour-long discussion on how evidence-based treatments are defined, ifwhen to consider modifying them, then evaluating if those changes still qualify as evidence-based practice. Recognizing and identifying practices and promises that aren’t backed by research is a key ethical responsibility in clinical decision-making.

You’ll learn:
• What counts as evidence-based practice and treatments
• Three warning signs of pseudoscientific interventions
• How evidence-based treatments are determined

CEBT is delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of “Treating Eating Disorders with DBT: The MED DBT Protocol.” Reflecting two decades of collaboration and practice, co-authors Anita Federici, Ph.D., CPsych, FAED and CEBT founder Lucene Wisniewski, Ph.D., FAED have written a textbook designed to speak directly to DBT clinicians who may feel under-equipped, or even intimidated, when working with eating disorders.

This book offers a full adaptation of DBT for eating disorders, including a neurobiological informed conceptualization of eating disorders, ways to integrate food, fluid, and weight targets, strategies for managing therapy interfering behaviors arising from eating disorders, attention to body image, trauma, sensory sensitivity, neurodiversity, and more.

The MED DBT Protocol represents a major step forward in our field, and we are honored to be part of this innovative work. Pre-orders at www.guilford.com/ are now open. Order a copy and stay at the front of evidence-based practice!

Interested in learning more about the MED DBT Protocol? Register today for the inaugural MED DBT Conference this September at www.meddbtconference.com.

We look forward to learning with you!

We couldn't be more excited to have this project come to fruition. Congratulations to Anita & Lucene for your dedication & commitment to teaching a community of therapists to treat a community of clients.

In our MED-DBT Era… 🎉

We’re thrilled to share that our book,
Treating Eating Disorders with DBT: The MED-DBT Protocol, is now available for pre-order!

This marks the beginning of what we hope will be a new era in how we conceptualize, relate to, and treat multidiagnostic eating disorders - those nuanced, layered presentations that so often fall through the cracks of traditional care.

Over the last two decades, we’ve listened closely to our clients and teams, adapted and revised, and shared countless conversations across time zones.

The result is a comprehensive DBT-based protocol rooted in science, compassion, and clinical practicality.

This book is the result of:

20+ years of evolving a treatment model from the ground up

A collaboration defined by mutual inspiration, laughter, and shared purpose

A desire to give clinicians something both technically sound and deeply human

We’re so proud to finally share it with you!

Are you a mental health therapist passionate about helping parents whose adult children struggle to reach milestones, manage emotions or engage in high-risk behaviors? Join our upcoming 6-hour workshop designed to teach DBT and SPACE therapy tools tailored for working with parents.

This intermediate level workshop will review the rationale for combining Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with an adaptation of Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) to help parents struggling with a multi-diagnostic adult children. Participants learn the functional role of accommodation and will review practical interventions that promote “right-sized” changes for parents. The training also models application of specific DBT skills to target urges, thoughts, and emotions that parents identify as fueling accommodation.
Learning Objectives
• Explain the rationale for using DBT and SPACE with parents of multi-diagnostic adult children
• Describe the dialectics of accommodation for parents and adult children
• Define the forms of parental accommodation and explain how they reinforce ineffective behaviors
• Describe the importance of creating a supportive statement for parents and their adult children and finding synthesis as parental accommodation is reduced
• Identify practical applications of how each DBT skill module behaviorally supports parents in reducing accommodation and increases capabilities in adult children

Calling all parents of struggling adult children! The next 4-week skillful parenting course begins Tuesday August 12th!

CEBT has developed a 4-week education and support program based in Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) . The course is designed for parents of struggling young adults who feel exhausted, out of options and feel confused about what to do (or what not to do) to make meaningful change.

Topics include:
How helpful parenting can become a pattern that leaves everyone feeling stuck.
How to engage with less tension and redefine emotional support.
How to establish or change household expectations within reason for each family member.
How to take steps that encourage both support and growing independence.

Once parents have completed this 4-week course, there are optional ongoing education and support groups that offer both additional skills training and support from other parents.

Interested in learning more about parenting these complex young adults? Read more about DBT and SPACE course by scanning the QR code, or following https://cebtohio.com/skillful-parenting-space-for-parents-of-struggling-adult-children/. Join F.E.A.S.T. and Lucene Wisniewski, Ph.D, FAED, Chief Operating Officer for the Center for Evidence Based treatment (CEBT) this Wednesday August 6th!

Dr. Wisniewski will highlight the effectiveness of Family Based Therapy (FBT) when it works, as well as what to consider when it doesn’t. FBT offers parents and caregivers hope as an evidence-based treatment for adolescents suffering from an eating disorder. However, there are situations which make benefitting from FBT alone complicated.

Loved ones with an eating disorder who also suffer from concurrent anxiety, depression or substance use disorders, those with greater emotional dysregulation (e.g., anger and aggression), or those who engage in suicidal/self-injurious behaviors may represent a form of the illness that practitioners consider “difficult to treat” -- and in treating their symptoms, FBT alone may not “be enough.” Parents and caregivers may feel unable to provide FBT without more support or training for themselves. They wonder, “how can I get her to eat when she screams at us for hours at a time?”

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for the “hard-to-treat” patient and can be a viable adjunct to FBT for treating eating disorders. In this webinar, Dr. Wisniewski will explore the effectiveness and feasibility of integrating DBT with FBT. The FBT-DBT approach calls for an innovative combination of strategies well-established in the successful use of FBT for the management of eating problems as well as DBT in the treatment for emotion dysregulation. This webinar will discuss for whom this model may be appropriate and in which ways FBT and DBT are complementary treatments.

Dr. Wisniewski is an internationally recognized leader in eating disorder treatment and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), with almost 30 years of clinical, research and training experience. An Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychological Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Wisniewski has taught hundreds of workshops and continuing education seminars around the world and has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and invited book chapters, and is the co-author of the MED-DBT Treatment Manual to be published in 2025 with Guilford Press.
