Nursing Home News - Long Term Care News

Esther's Law
Advocating for Cameras in All Long Term Care Facilities in All States In 2011 I placed a hidden camera in my mother's nursing home room and caught eight aides abusing her. One aide was charged with 14 counts of felony abuse and p

lea bargained down to seven felony counts and went to prison for 10 1/2 years. Three were fired and three were disciplined. The nursing home was fined $357,000. All the major media around the world reported on the abuse, and it was included in many stories done on nursing home abuse including a CBS story that rated all 50 states on nursing home abuse, my mother was the one from Ohio. The media kept me in the news for 10 years after the abuse and that resulted in me finally getting legislation for Camera's in nursing homes. The Ohio Law named Esther's Law Ohio Senate Bill 58 unanimously passed in the Senate and Unanimously passed the House committee and is expected to become a law in Ohio soon.

We are doing a media story on Esther’s Law. If you have had any problems with the nursing home installing a camera, or if they charged you to install it. If they blocked or removed the camera. Also if you support the two Bills in the Ohio House and Senate to amend Esther’s Law. Which one do you support and why. Also if you are from another state where the camera law failed or the law passed and you have had problems with the camera law. Also supporting a federal we have a petition for.

If the reporter decides to use it he will do a zoom interview.

You can message me with your information.

Cameras in long term care facilities gives you peace of mind knowing you can check on your loved ones 24-7. Cameras are proven that they deter and stop neglect and abuse. Staffing does not stop neglect and abuse.

We will not make WiFi and facilities purchasing cameras as a condition of this law to have a camera. There are many option for inexpensive WiFi and cameras. Anyone else purchases the camera they own it and the videos.

If the facility offers free WiFi and it works for you, do it. We suggest getting your own to avoid any problems.

ENHAA - Elderly Nursing Home Abuse Advocates

Our page is 15 years old this year with over 10,000 followers. We got Esther's Law passed in Ohio and helped get Nevada's Camera Law passed. We are currently working with Ohio Legislators to amend Esther's Law. We have worked in many states all across the country with their camera law. We have had over 100 media stories in 15 years. A new state we are currently working with to get their camera law passed is Indiana.

We need more people to email Senator Stephen Huffman Chairman of the Senate Health Committee and tell him you want to give proponent testimony for SB154 Esther's Law amendment. He will send you a form to fill out and you can testify by email.

Just tell them you support SB154. It adds assisted living facilities and adds language to stop these unscrupulous nursing home from manipulating Esther's Law and giving families a hard time installing a camera.

Ohio lawmakers are considering a bill that would expand the use of cameras into the private rooms of assisted living and residential care facility residents. But senior living experts in the state said the bill goes a little too far.

All long term care facilities respond the same way to abuse. They basically say "Our policies are to provide quality care" and that's all they have to do when cited for neglect and abuse is to correct the problem with a retraining program for all employees with consist of "Don't do this".

This one is in the State of New York where the camera law for long term care facilities is facing an uphill battle. I have worked with advocates in NY to give them information needed to get this law passed. Even though these are not isolated incidents to this facility or any facility in NY or any state. Legislators refuse to pass camera laws. The cameras you see in this video are security cameras owned by the facility.

This is why we are fighting for a Federal Law for cameras in all long term care facilities in every state. This law benefits all states, even the ones that already have a camera law because this is a federal law.

This is opposition testimony for Ohio Senate Bill 154 from the Ohio Health Care Association and this group Senior Services that came out of the woodwork after four years Esther's Law has been in effect.

They both cry the same old same old that they do in every state. I believe they go to opposition school to learn how not to protect our most vulnerable loved ones.

This same law is in about 18 other states for the past 25 years and the language is all the same, but they still try to tell you the PRIVACY rights of everyone else is violated and offer nothing to the residents. They don't want you to have a camera that has two way communication, like they don't carry one in their pocket everyday. We are in the year 2026 not 1980 when we had video cameras that had none of these features. Todays cameras are almost unlimited, and technology is still advancing to who knows what.

They don't want you to use the facilities WiFi, they think this would stop families from having a camera in the facility don't provide the WiFi. We do not recommend that you use the facilities WiFi. There are many options to get your own and when you have your own you control it, not the facility. This amendment makes WiFi an option if facilities offer it and you are OK with it, then use it. Just understand the risk of them shutting it off.

As for bandwidth, If you are uploading your videos to a cloud service it takes a lot of bandwidth. We recommend you use an SD card and swap it out with another one every couple of days or so often and download it on your laptop or computer. Today a phone does not replace the need for a computer.

We have a law that must be followed, just like nursing home and Doctors have laws they must follow, and one of them that they must follow is the HIPAA law. We are not responsible for any law that Doctors and long term care facilities must follow. They must make sure that they don't break any laws that pertain to them. The camera law does not apply to HIPAA or privacy rights of anyone but the residents.

These organizations are lying to you and I will again destroy their testimony in hearings.

You must help by asking Senator Stephen Huffman chairman of the Senate Health Committee to testify by email on Ohio Senate Bill 154. Just tell them you fully support SB154, and oppose any changes made by the Health Care Association, Leading Age, Senior Services and all opposing parties. Tell him you fully support Senator Ingram and Steve Piskor, and pass this amendment to Esther's Law.

You must do this now. IT only takes a minute and he will send you the information on how to testify.
