SCAM ALERT : MEDICARE FRAUD IS STILL RISING IN OUR NATION; Clinton, Ok. Medicare Program is one of The nation’s 54 Senior Medicare Patrol, or SMP, programs that is managed by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, with the mission to help empower and assist people to prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse. Medicare fraud is a particularly insidious form of financial scam, unlike other fraud schemes targeting an individual, the government and American taxpayers all pay the price. Keri Divis a Medicare Counselor finds it challenging to detect Medicare fraud in real time, there are sometimes weeks and months between when Medicare is falsely billed for services and when an Medicare Counselor or beneficiary sees that charge show up on their Medicare Summary Notice or plan’s Explanation of Benefits.
The Senior Medicare Patrol program model is one of prevention that is helping solve the Medicare Fraud in our Nation. Keri says" SMPs are here to educate beneficiary's of fraud in their area. She helps Medicare beneficiaries each year learn how to guard their personal health information, scrutinize their medical statements and bills, and subsequently alert the right people or SMP program to any suspicious activity. The SMPs report cases of possible fraud, errors, and abuse to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and HHS Office of Inspector General, who then take up the investigation.
