Over 75 sunscreens were recently recalled due to the presence of benzene, a contaminant that causes blood disorders like anemia, leukemia and other cell-based cancers following chronic exposure and is also a reproductive toxin. Customers are asked to dispose of or request a refund for the affected bottles immediately. It would be bad enough if this was the only dangerous chemical, but there are more.
FDA officials are currently in the process of overhauling its guidelines for sunscreen production in the United States and two more ingredients, tromaline aline salicylate and PABA — are no longer recognized as safe. And an active sunscreen ingredient known as oxybenzone has become increasingly condemned by health providers and ecologists alike. It's been "noted to ruin coral reefs and have negative effects on our endocrine system," according to Kenneth Mark, MD.
Experts tell us that the safest sunscreens are those that use zinc or titanium dioxide as the active ingredient. We prefer zinc. As it happens, there are a couple of those on the recall list.
