Breast Milk Donation Vs. Breast Milk Sharing

Do you have extra breastmilk and want to help other moms and babies? There are 2 different options available to you. You can either milk share or donate to a milk bank. So what’s the difference?

BREAST MILK DONATION:

* Requires Formal Screening Process: involves brief telephone consult with follow up written questionnaires to complete and if you qualify, will then need to proceed with bloodwork at a specified laboratory free of charge.

*The process for screening approval takes ~3 weeks to complete.

*Once approved to donate milk, you will be given proper instructions on collection and storage of breastmilk according to milk bank specifications and must drop off milk at a designated milk bank drop off location. (There is a designated drop off site at Cody Regional Hospital)

*Your donated breast milk typically is only for use in NICUs and not necessarily distributed to NICUs in your area but they do try to accommodate this.

*Your donated milk may also be used by very medically fragile babies if prescribed by a Pediatrician or Nurse Practitioner and potentially can be used for research purposes.

MILK-SHARING:

*Informal screening between the mom donating and the mother in need of breastmilk for her baby

*It can involve sharing breast milk among family members and close friends

*Breast milk sharing can help mothers with low milk supply, unable to breastfeed, has adopted a baby, or any other reason where a full breast milk supply has been compromised.

*EATS ON FEETS is a national non-profit organization that has Facebook groups set up for each state that assists mothers in need of additional breast milk. They also provide guidelines on how to safely milk-share. Go to eatsonfeets.org and click on your state of residence.

*Unlike breast milk donation, moms are guaranteed to help other mothers in their own community and do not have to go through a time consuming screening process.

MILK SHARING IS SHARING!! You are agreeing not to sell your breast milk for profit and is the cornerstone of safe milk sharing principles.

ARE YOU READING TO YOUR BABY?

*Did you know that for every one hour of TV, computer, iPad, or any
other electronic media use, your baby/child loses exposure to approximately 750 words?

*Read before naptime, bedtime, and/or during scheduled quiet time.

*When reading to your baby use physical books not iPads or Kindles. Reading to your baby is more than language exposure. Physical books allow babies to develop sensory skills as well as their fine and gross motor skills that electronic devices cannot provide.

*Schedule weekly trips to the local Park County Library in Cody. It's a wonderful FREE resource to instill a love of reading. There are great programs for babies/toddlers and provides a social outlet for both moms and babies.

*It's Never Too Soon To Start! Make It Part Of Your Daily Routine!

YES, YOU CAN SAFELY BEDSHARE IF YOU ARE BREASTFEEDING BY FOLLOWING THESE SAFER SLEEP TIPS:

# NO SMOKING
# NO ALCOHOL USE
DRUG USE (This includes prescription medications that may make you drowsy or inhibit your ability to arouse from sleep.)
, firm mattress
# No extraneous blanket, bedding, pillows
# Side of bed you are sleeping is not up against a wall
# Sleeping in the "Cuddle Curl" position as in the picture (Mothers have been observed instinctively sleeping in this protective position when video-graphed during studies on bedsharing)
# Studies show that mothers who breastfeed and bedshare have longer durations of breastfeeding, improved sleep, both mother and baby arouse easier to each other's movements/needs, and baby's heart rate, rhythm and respiratory patterns have improved regulation all leading to a significantly lower risk of SIDS.

For more information: Go to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine at www.bfmed.org and read their policy statement on bedsharing.

* MASTITIS IS AN INFLAMMATORY CONDITION THAT CAN BE TREATED WITHOUT ANTIBIOTICS IN MOST CASES

*UNTREATED ANEMIA ESPECIALLY IF ASSOCIATED WITH POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE, THYROID DYSFUNCTION, POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME, METABOLIC IMBALANCES LIKE TYPE II DIABETES, AND OBESITY CAN CONTRIBUTE TO LOW MILK SUPPLY AND/OR DELAYED MILK PRODUCTION.

*YOUR BREASTMILK PRODUCTION DOES NOT DEPEND ON GETTING EXTRA CALORIES A DAY OR DRINKING 64 OUNCES OF WATER PER DAY.

The above statements are factual and if that comes as a surprise to you, then schedule your lactation consult with an experienced Lactation Specialist who is also a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Get up to date information and valuable advice to ensure your breastfeeding success. Call today to schedule a FREE 30 min Meet and Greet or breastfeeding consult at 307-212-8283 or BOOK ONLINE at www. milkwagon.net.
