Our Director, Dr. Doug Tolleson, is in McGregor, Texas, conducting a crime scene investigation simulation with our portable NIR instrument. The scenario involves cattle theft where perpetrators either brand unbranded cattle or alter existing brands to disguise ownership.

Dr. Tolleson collects multiple measurements, including the height and width of brands, to determine the original brand size based on cattle growth curves. The portable NIR spectroscopy provides an additional layer of analysis by examining the biochemical composition of the brand tissue. As brands heal over time, their chemistry undergoes detectable changes that the NIR instrument can identify, providing valuable forensic evidence.

Dr. Tolleson has been developing and refining this technique over years of research, demonstrating the practical application of spectroscopy technology in livestock forensics and theft prevention.🐂🕵️‍♂️

📊 Great news!

Your GAN Lab reports on Nutbal Online now include a Body Condition Score (BCS) Projection Chart.

This new feature gives you a clearer view of how your herd’s condition may change over the next few weeks. Each dot shows the projected BCS, while the bars highlight the possible range around those estimates. The further out the projection, the wider the range becomes.📈

These ranges are a reminder that the results are guides, not guarantees. It’s a practical tool designed to help you plan ahead while accounting for natural variation in grazing systems. ✅

👉 Log into your Nutbal Online account today to explore this new feature and make the most of your reports!

Montana, you’ve been amazing!

Between the Grazing Expo, Dr. Tolleson’s talk on Nutritional Monitoring of Grazing Animals: Old School and High Tech, meeting with ranchers, and connecting with customers, this trip was full of inspiration, learning, and great conversations.

We even wrapped up the evenings with live music and good company.

This year is extra special for us as we also celebrate the GAN Lab’s 30th anniversary—three decades of research, innovation, and service in grazing livestock nutrition.

Huge thanks to the Montana Grazing Lands Coalition for hosting such a special event!

August sampling ✅🐂🌾

We have officially reached the halfway point to our South Texas Nutritional Monitoring Project and we are excited to see the amazing results that come with it!

Being able to be in the field and see the changes in the pastures and cattle month to month is amazing and truly shows the amount of hard work it takes to raise such awesome herds!

We can’t wait to see what the rest of the sampling season has in store! 🐮🌾

Our team recently represented the Grazingland Animal Nutrition Lab at the 52nd Annual Sheep & Goat Field Day in San Angelo, TX, hosted by Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension. This year’s event was dedicated to Kerrville flood victims and brought together researchers, extension specialists, and industry professionals from across the region.🐏🐐

Our director Doug Tolleson, Associate Professor and Chief Scientist at Sonora Station, presented “Sonora Station Research Update,” sharing the latest findings from his many ongoing research initiatives.

During the research poster session, our talented team of recent graduates Dr. Camille Carey, Kimberly Tanguma, and Jessica Dudak, along with graduate student Timothy Lyons, presented their research findings to attendees. The interactive poster session provided an excellent platform for knowledge exchange and networking within the sheep and goat community. 🌾🔬

The sheep and goat field day was a great opportunity to share our research with fellow scientists and industry professionals. Proud of our team’s contributions to advancing knowledge in grazingland animal nutrition! 🤠

📣Calling all customers, partners, and friends.

The Grazingland Animal Nutrition Lab will be collecting donations to help our Central Texas neighbors recover from the recent devastating flooding event that has impacted the Hill Country communities. The catastrophic floods have caused tremendous loss of life and property damage, leaving families and volunteers in urgent need of basic supplies and support.

Every donation will make a meaningful difference in helping our neighbors rebuild after this tragedy. Together, we can show the strength of our Texas community spirit during this difficult time.
