📍 National Bison Association Winter Conference | Denver, CO

Dr. Doug Tolleson represented the GAN Lab during the “Decoding Bison” session alongside an outstanding group of speakers and approximately 100 attendees:

• Jeff M. Martin, Ph.D. (SDSU) – Session Chair
• Dr. Rachel Short – Building bridges between producers and NRCS (SDSU CIG)
• Dr. Philip Urso – RCN Bison Health Project and mineral requirements in bison
• Angela Lemminger – Updated bison body condition scoring (SDSU)
• Dr. Doug Tolleson – What the GAN Lab at Texas A&M University can do for bison producers

This meeting was also a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with a bison producer community that the late Dr. Jerry Stuth engaged with more than 25 years ago. The GAN Lab has a long-standing history of working with bison systems, and it was rewarding to continue that legacy.

We truly appreciated the conversations, questions, and feedback from producers, researchers, and partners.

We would be happy to follow up and continue the conversation.

"Bison are willing teachers, if we are willing students."
Dr. Jeff Martin

This morning at the 2026 National Bison Association Winter Conference we are exploring Decoding Bison with the following bison specialists:
● Dr. Jeff Martin
● Dr. Rachel Short - Building Bridges Between Producers & NRCS with the SDSU CIG
● Dr. Phil Urso - New RCN Bison Health Project at SDSU & Update on Mineral
Requirements in Bison
● Angie Lemminger - Updated Bison Body Condition Scoring Available Through SDSU
● Dr. Doug Tolleson - What the GAN Lab at Texas A&M University can do for you

Wrapping up our South Texas Nutritional Monitoring Study with style! 🎉

Over the 6 past months, our nutritionist have been working with ranchers across South Texas, using f***l near infrared spectroscopy (FNIRS) to monitor cattle nutrition and provide data-driven grazing management recommendations. This collaborative research has empowered producers with real-time insights into their herds’ nutritional status—helping them make informed decisions about diet quality, body condition, and pasture management.

This project has been all about learning from the land, learning from the cows, and learning from each other, and we couldn’t have done it without our amazing South Texas ranching partners.

Here’s to the power of collaboration, community, and science-based management! Looking forward to sharing our findings and our next steps very soon! 🐄🌾

Turns out our nutritionist can ride scooters just as well as they conduct studies! 🛴🤩

From Texas to global grazing systems 🌍

Between 1998 and 2000, GAN Lab leadership worked with partners in East Africa, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania, applying NIRS as part of drought early warning systems for livestock. These efforts focused on building local capacity and supporting grazing-based decision-making during periods of environmental stress.

In 2005, through a Mercy Corps/USAID project, GAN Lab expertise supported work in Mongolia to establish an NIRS laboratory at the state university and conduct feeding and grazing trials with yak, cattle, and camels.

These photos capture moments from these long-standing international collaborations and reflect the GAN Lab’s commitment to applied science, partnership, and global learning as we celebrate 30 years.

Our very own Dr. Doug Tolleson, Director of the Grazingland Animal Nutrition Lab, just returned from an incredible experience in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon! Dr. Tolleson was invited by Dr. Jesús Velazco, Director of Perishables at H-E-B México, to participate in a 3-day intensive workshop as part of their ongoing series for beef producers focused on Animal Welfare, Sustainability, and Traceability. 🌾

Dr. Tolleson presented on: “Managing rangeland and animal resources to meet ranching sustainability goals”

Through a dynamic combination of lectures, interactive group discussions, and hands-on classroom exercises, Dr. Tolleson worked with an outstanding group of 25 participants including:
• Ranchers
• Feedlot and dairy operators
• Feed and animal health suppliers

📍 The workshop was held at the Monterrey Tech campus, where participants dove deep into three key areas:
✓ Basic rangeland resources
✓ Grazing animal (livestock and wildlife) management
✓ Practical economic and ecological sustainability.

The group was highly engaged, asking challenging questions and fostering collaborative learning. As Dr. Tolleson noted: “I learned more from them than they did from me. We all learned from each other. Win-Win.”

A huge thank you to Dr. Velasco and his team for the invitation, logistics, and exceptional hospitality. Plans are already underway for next year’s workshop! 🤝
