How have we forgotten this? 😱👇

Anxiety. Rocks in my shoulders. A neck that could barely turn. Knots in my stomach.

That was stress living in my body. Not just in my head — in my actual tissue. My muscles. My gut. My spine.

But my dog? He shakes it off without a second thought. Every single time.

Turns out he doing exactly what our bodies were designed to do — and what most of us were never taught.

Here’s the science:

When stress or adrenaline spikes — a car pulls out in front of you, a hard conversation, that slow burn of tension that never quite leaves — your nervous system activates your fight or flight response. Your muscles contract. Stress hormones flood your body. Your system braces.

The problem is most of us never complete the cycle. We just... hold it. And it stays there.

Shaking — or what researchers call neurogenic tremoring — is your body’s built-in mechanism for discharging that stored stress. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system, burns off excess adrenaline, reduces cortisol, and literally resets your nervous system back toward safety.

Animals do it instinctively after every threat. Humans do it too — we just learned to suppress it. To hold it together. To look fine.

This is how you give your body permission to let it go 👆

Feet shoulder-width apart. Start shaking from your wrists, up through your arms, your whole body. Bounce gently on the balls of your feet. Let it be uncoordinated. One minute to start, build to three to five.

I LOVE a good wellness gadget! But I also am a science NERD 🤓 and I only buy and use what truly works! Not just the latest fad or coolest thing an influencer promises will change your life. Actually I usually avoid those! But THIS is different!

Red light isn’t a gimmick or a fad or an influencer trend. It works by improving your mitochondria on a cellular level, resulting in all sorts of healing in your body.

But not all red lights are created equal (and honestly, I thought it was a bad when it first came out) I did over a year of research before I finally bought one.

Breathe with me 🤍🦋

This vagus nerve toning Excercise is calledbutterfly wings (don’t you just love that name! 😊)!

It’s specifically designed to keep your nervous system from descending into freeze.

When we’re overwhelmed or exhausted, our body’s instinct is to collapse inward — to protect itself. That’s the shutdown response. This movement pattern interrupts that.

The expansion on the inhale, paired with the audible sigh, signals your ventral vagal system — the part of your nervous system responsible for feeling safe and connected — that you’re still here. Still okay. Not going under. You’re safe.

I felt emotional the first time I tried this one. Which probably tells you something about how long I’d been holding myself small.

How to:
-Stand with your feet hip-width apart.

-Inhale as you expand and open, make yourself big.

-Exhale as you curl your back and fold your arms in toward your chest — making yourself small.

Inhale — expand. Exhale — curl. Let the sigh be loud ☝️

Repeat for one to three minutes. If you get light headed, return to a normal breath pattern until you feel better, then continue. Always, always, always listen to your body!!

Two inhales. One exhale. 30 seconds. Try it with me ⬇️

Your nervous system helps you be energized when you need it and calm when you need it. Must people (me included) are chronically stuck in fight or flight which means energy = anxiety and “relaxing” = numbed out or crashed.

But a HEALTHY nervous system can be energized and calm simultaneously without anxiety or feeling crashed.

This particular breath pattern is called the physiological sigh.

The double inhale fully reinflates the tiny air sacs in your lungs that partially collapse under stress. The long exhale then activates your parasympathetic nervous system — rest and digest — and gently slows your heart rate.

Then we add a stretch and extra long exhale at then end which lets your body know she’s safe.

I know it sounds almost too simple (honestly almost everything nervous system sounds too simple, especially from a girl who has tried to functional medicine, lab test and supplement her way TJ health with complex biological functions!) breathing!? Seriously!! That’s too easy.

But there is real physiology behind why this works, and I keep coming back to it because it does.

How do you feel now? 🤍 that only took 30
Seconds!

3x 10 second breaths (4sec in, 6 seconds out) have become an anchor in my day as I navigate the journey of healing and resetting my nervous system.

This particular practice is so simple and easy, I do it between every single one of my clients, I do it every time I get in the car and every time I park before I go to the next thing.

In for 4 . . . .
Out for 6 . . . . . .

I know it sounds almost too simple… but there’s actual physiology & science behind why this REALLY works.

When your exhale is longer than your inhale, you’re gently activating your vagus nerve— which is basically your body’s reset button that instantly tells your body “you’re safe,” helping you move out of fight or flight and into your parasympathetic or rest and digest nervous system.

Longer exhales increase parasympathetic activity (rest + digest),
help slow your heart rate,
and improve heart rate variability (which is a fancy way of saying your body is more resilient and less stuck in stress mode).

I’m learning to like 5, 8 even 20 minute minute Breathwork and meditation sessions. But sometimes that amount of time can feel overwhelming and all I have is 30 seconds.

What I know now, is that 30 seconds is enough to reset my nervous system if I have the right tool.

3 rounds is enough to start 🤍 buy you can do 8-10 rounds. If you start feeling lightheaded, return to your regular breathing for a second and then start back in.
