(We’ve all seen group texts… let’s spare them that.)

🇺🇸 Honoring a Civil War Hero at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens 🇺🇸

Among the many stories preserved at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens is the remarkable life of a young man whose service and sacrifice reflect the courage of a generation.

The son of Henry D. and Elizabeth Hinkle, he was living as a farmer with his family in Columbia, Lancaster County in 1860. Standing 5’11” with dark hair and blue eyes, he answered the call to serve his country during one of the most challenging periods in our nation’s history.

He proudly served two terms of military service during the Civil War:
• In April 1861, he enlisted with Company F, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, serving as a private and honorably discharged that summer.
• In August 1862, he enlisted again with Company B, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry, later promoted to corporal.

Tragically, he was shot in the chest during the fighting at Petersburg, Virginia on June 17, 1864. He was transported to Mount Pleasant U.S. Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he later died from his wounds. Though first buried there, his family brought him home, and church records show he was laid to rest on July 5 — returning to the community he loved.

His life reminds us of the cost of freedom and the devotion of those who served. We are honored to preserve his memory at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens and to share the stories of the heroes who rest within our grounds.

We honor the life and legacy of Jimmy Sheckard (1878–1947) — one of baseball’s early greats and a true pioneer of the game.

A standout outfielder, Sheckard made his mark during the dead-ball era, most notably with the Chicago Cubs, where he helped lead the team to World Series championships in 1907 and 1908. Known for his speed, strong arm, and consistent hitting, he was among the National League’s top players in stolen bases and runs batted in during his career.

Beyond the statistics, Jimmy Sheckard represented the grit, discipline, and passion that defined early professional baseball. His contributions helped shape the game we know today.

Today, we remember Jimmy Sheckard not just as an athlete, but as a lasting part of baseball history. ⚾🕊️
