Legacy of Love Counseling & Wellness

LOLCW currently provides therapeutic services including individual & couples counseling. Also, LOLCW provides consultative services regarding mental health concerns & presentations as well.

Operating as usual

I have always been interested in history & learning more about where I come from. I was the grandchild sitting with my grandmother going through photo albums asking who is such and such. Talking to the old folks at the cookouts trying to learn who I’m related to and how. And in more recent times taking DNA tests to learn more about my genetic makeup.

Having a sense of identity is POWER. Knowing where you come from & exploring the similarities you may have with your forefathers and foremothers is an invaluable & empowering learning experience. As a people we have been placed in positions to remind folks how different we are from our ancestors. Nonetheless, we are still the epitome of their wildest dreams.

In honor of Black History Month, take some time to learn a little bit more about who you come from. Use what you gain to enhance your strengths & stretch your growth areas.

We celebrate Blackness daily, but in the spirit of February, #BlackHistoryMonth has been recognized as a time of HONOR. Honoring & revering those who came before us. Honoring their efforts. Honoring their struggles. Honoring their resilience.

As we honor our history this month, let us reflect on how we honor those within our own lives who paved ways before us. Also, let us reflect on how we honor ourselves.

Holiday seasons are hard for a lot of folks. And with COVID things can be doubly hard for a lot of folks. Especially people with eating disorders. If you have an ED & no matter where you are in your recovery process, here are 5 straightforward things you can do to enjoy your holiday season!

• SET A GAME PLAN! If you’re working with a therapist & dietitian, identify a concrete plan that works for where you are in your recovery process and stick to it. Take picture of the plan, write it out. Whatever you need to do to have it with you. That way you don’t have to rely on your own mental energy to make decisions about what to do, what to eat, or how to cope.

• PRACTICE MINDFULNESS & BE PRESENT! Remember your reasons for being wherever you are. If you’re on a zoom call with your family. If you’re actually with your family and friends, actively be in the space you’re in. Use grounding exercises such as using your 5 senses to be attentive to your environment to bring you back from those dreadful disordered thoughts. Recite or read affirmations to challenge them & to give a boost of confidence - cause YOU REALLY CAN DO THE DAMN THING!

• KNOW THAT IT IS OK TO SAY NO! Depending on your stage of recovery you may be more in the I’ll stick with the plan phase & may have to tell family & friends no or not right now & in the words of @iamtabithabrown That’s Your Business. Also, if you want to be flexible & use your plan as a safety net that too is your business. Either way is absolutely ok & if it takes a no or not right now to get you there that’s ok too.

• USE YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM! ED can be very isolating creatures. If you have someone you can trust, have a conversation with them about your plan, set up a check-in schedule & how y’all will do so, and use it when you need it, on your own terms.

• BE KIND TO YOURSELF! The recovery process isn’t a linear process. You are where you are & that’s ok.

As a child I used to say “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” and how far from the truth that is.

How you talk to yourself, how you speak about others, how others speak to you or about you, and how you talk about your circumstances plays a major part in how you view, handle, and understand your experiences.

Know that words matter, silent or spoken. Words are the breeding ground for life & strength. So be mindful of how you talk today. Be kind in what you say, to yourself and to others.

And honestly that’s ok.

And please note that all appointments continue to be via tele-health. In-person services will resume when the COVID goes away!

“I wish somebody would just do ...” - This is something that I hear a lot from clients especially clients who are feeling stuck, and I always rebuttal back well are you not somebody? 🤔🧐 then I get some look back like 😬 ehh & the response you’re right I guess.

Know that you are the somebody who can invoke the change you desire to see in your life. That’s all. That’s it. Trust yourself.

The Black Buying Power is $3.9 TRILLION! & continues to grow despite discriminatory practices continuing to happen in the very places we spend our money.

The cost of 60 mins of healing can range from $60 to maybe $150 and if you’re blessed with insurance you may be somewhere in the middle of that range.

But to keep things in perspective, how many bottles have you bought to cope since the pandemic started? How many new outfits have you ordered off Fashion Nova to be fly in while not leaving your living room or front porch? How many new pairs of Jordans have you bought? Makeup palettes (telling on myself here 🥴)? Craft supplies for things you have yet to make?

We all have been in a position of spending money unnecessarily to cope, but how many therapy sessions could you have had by now to resolve your underlying issues? We all have choices, even as limited as they may be for Black & Brown communities, but now has proven to be a great time to focus on healing from the hurts, traumas, pain, depression, anxiety, life uncertainties, whatever. Most providers are doing teletherapy so you can work on your issues in the privacy of your own home. There are also lots of organizations offering free funding for therapeutic services to Black & Brown people right now.

Know that there are other ways to cope that have a greater return on your investment. The materialistic stuff gets old. A healed soul produces more healed souls.

Just some food for thought this lovely Tuesday.

Be Blessed. 🖤

If you’re anything like me, getting caught up in your thoughts can be very hindering, disruptive, and almost paralyzing.

You can spend a lot of time doing non-productive things like being on social media and less time being productive on things that matter simply because you can’t quiet your mind. And that can lead to feelings of not doing enough or being good enough, and those dreadful negative thought patterns that serve well NOBODY!

One of my most favorite tools to use for myself and that I tell my clients is to write out your thoughts & get them out of your head.

Since we spend unprecedented amounts of time on our little smart gadgets, there are ways to use it for your benefit, such as making a locked note to jot down your thoughts so you can address what’s bothering you, free up mental space, & keep you present, & focused.

Don’t get so #entangled in your mind that you interrupt your peace.

Hey Y’all!!! 👋🏽 There’s a ton of new faces here so I just wanted to reintroduce myself, especially since I took a little hiatus from posting these last couple of weeks.

A Little About Me:

• My name is Sabrina, I’m 30 & I’m an LPC & the owner of Legacy of Love Counseling & Wellness, LLC.

• I am currently working on my PhD *woot woot* in Counselor Education & Supervision.

• I’m an unapologetically #black, #Christian #millennial, born & bred in the South. I’m a good mix of love thy neighbor but will knock if one must buck 🙃

• I specialize in Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders, Phase of Life, Sense of Self/Self-Esteem, & Cultural Concerns.

What You Can Expect While You’re Here:

• Affirmations to promote positive & productive self-talk. As Black people there are so many negative stereotypes ascribed to us as a people, however that’s the business of the folk who believe it. We on the other hand will stand in what we know to be true about us as a people & that’s that on that! 😌

• Tips & strategies to build healthy coping & wellness behaviors because strong 🧠 & healthy bodies are imperative. 💪🏽

• MH & other health stats for Black communities along with advocacy for the use of collaborative care to help improve overall health of Black people & to strengthen Black communities.

• Cultural uplifting cause well we’re just dope af & I love us ❤️🖤💚

Welcome again & thank you all for being here. I hope the content posted here will be helpful for you & a friend & a friend of a friend!

Stay safe outchea!

With 🖤 Sabrina

The state of this world has prompted the need to really enforce current boundaries and establish new ones.

Often times, when setting boundaries where there are none, however, we may experience feelings of guilt and uncertainty for doing so. Not today y’all!

Nowadays we have so much access to everything, good and bad. And now is a tumultuous and trying time, especially for Black people. So the #Boundaries you set are a NECESSITY for living a peaceful, clear, and whole life.
