I mean what does an ED really look like? 🥴 This is why we should be mindful of the comments we make to people about their bodies & appearances.
You just never know.
But in the words of the late bell hooks “Embracing a love ethic means that we utilize all the dimensions of love, care commitment trust responsibility respect and knowledge. We can successfully do this only by cultivating awareness. Being aware enables us to critically examine our actions to see what is needed so that we can give care, be responsible, show respect, and indicate a willingness to learn”.
So swipe to the end & head over to @heallovelegacy to start building your awareness today. ☺️
Don’t forget to like & follow as well ☺️
This number represents the percentage of individuals with eating disorders who also have co-occurring disorders like anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. 😱😰
Does the egg come before the chicken or the chicken before the egg? 🤷🏽♀️ but with such a high prevalence of comorbidity, the likelihood of running into someone with co-occurring disorders is too high to try to treat one without treating the other.
It is & I’m just here to start it off by busting a few ED myth bubbles.
• If you didn’t know Black women can & do develop eating disorders. They don’t discriminate.
• No, your friend or family won’t be just fine if they eat because ED are more than just about food. There are cognitive, emotional & physical components to ED that simply eating won’t fix. Developing a healthy relationship with food is only half the battle.
• Unless your therapist is also a registered dietitian, it is important to work with someone who understands how food works with health & more specifically that can help you understand how food works in your body.
• Eating disorders are GENETIC 🧬
• Being too strict & rigid in fact can contribute to more anxiety around one’s relationship with food.
• Everyone in fact does not have an ED. Do we have insecurities that we may face about our bodies & maybe some guilt around what we eat from time to time sure, but about 9% of the world are affected by ED.
• Recovery is not easy because change is not easy. Like life, recovery can be a journey of ebbs & flows but for every 3 steps forward and 2 back you’re still 1 step ahead of the game. Keep going 💪🏽
One of my professional goals is to move past the anxiety I feel when it comes to sharing knowledge.
Yesterday started off with tons of anxiety but it ended with lots of laughs & positive feedback.
Here’s to the overcome! ❤️🖤💚
It's something about them 20s that hit different. It's like you know that you're grown but you don't quite feel grown grown yet.
You're learning who you are, what you like, what you don't like. Pressures may be mounting to start to have certain things in place. Sometimes you may be feeling like people just don't understand. AND RELATIONSHIPS. Chile don't get me started on those. 😅
But you don't have to go at it alone.
Ms. 20 Something is a safe space for Black women in their 20s or transitioning into their 20s to figure out life. To heal, to learn, and to grow. 💛
We will talk about everything from self-love, body image, having a healthy relationship with food, relationships, self-confidence, boundary setting & more.
If you're interested in joining a supportive community as you figure out life, please contact us. Then tell a friend to tell a friend.
Dr. Martin Luther King was a champion of LOVE. He made it known that love is more than just a feeling, but it is an action. It is not a docile action. It is not an action taken without boundaries. But it is an action driven by intent, effort, and consistency. It is a healing action. It is an empowering action. It is a restoring action.
As we celebrate Dr. King's legacy on this day, let's act from a place of love. That may mean showing yourself a little more love today by having kind conversations with yourself. It may look like taking the necessary breaks you need. It may look like setting those boundaries you've been afraid to set for some time now.
Whatever it is, stick to it in and with love.
Getting these presentations skills up cause your girl really be scared *highkey* 🙈😂
