Let’s get to know another intern! Meet Dr. Ashley Qualls!

📍Hometown: Galesburg, IL

🩺 MD: University of Illinois-Rockford

🐯 Why Mizzou: When applying for residency, Mizzou caught my eye because it offered everything that I was looking for in a residency program: camaraderie among the residents, excellent training in trauma, rural exposure through the large area that the hospital system serves, and strong female leadership. An added perk was that my husband loved their urology program! Mizzou was the best fit to train us to serve rural populations without strong access to healthcare.

🏥 Outside of the ED: In my free time I love to run and workout, travel, try new coffee shops with my husband, watch reality TV, and spend time with my family, which includes my dog Milo!

Thursday is a perfect day for an intern spotlight! Meet Dr. Rachel Schuler!

📍 Hometown: Marshall, MO

🩺 Med school: University of Missouri School of Medicine

🐯 Why Mizzou: As soon as I rotated in EM as a 4th year at MU, I knew that this was a team I wanted to be a part of. Having worked in EMS during med school, and as a current volunteer with BCFPD, I’ve seen that teamwork is a critical element of medical practice, especially in settings where decisions are made and executed rapidly. The EM team at MU is highly effective in triaging, stabilizing, and managing patients, all while providing an environment where questions are welcome and feedback is bidirectional. Outside of the program itself, I also like Columbia’s proximity to several state parks and great restaurants.

🏥 Outside the ED: I love running with my dogs, weightlifting, cycling, reading, gardening, and spending time with my husband and family.

🩺 MD: Universidad Icesi

🐯 Why Mizzou: I wanted to come here because it is a university hospital, teaching center, and trauma center where I could thrive to become a great clinician, researcher, and educator.

🏥 Outside of the ED: I love going to the gym, playing tennis, traveling, and playing video games.

🐯 Why Mizzou: I knew I wanted to stay for residency after rotating in the department and seeing the collaborative atmosphere, the faculty and senior residents that’re always up for teaching, and how the program as a whole is committed to our education and growth.

🏥 Outside of the ED: I love to hang out with my friends, family, and my cat, eat too many sweets, read, and cheer on our basketball team in my free time!
