August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). A day that unites people across the globe to remember those we’ve lost, support families, and take action to prevent future overdoses.

At Maryhaven, we know recovery is possible—and that together, we can save lives. Whether by holding an event, starting a conversation, or sharing resources, every action matters.

Join us in spreading the message, honoring the journey, and building a future free from overdose.

⛳️ Earlier this week, Boomer Schmidt, Chief Advancement Officer, Zaki Murtadza, Director of Development, and Gorgio Fleming, Care Navigator, represented Maryhaven at the inaugural 100 Black Men of Central Ohio Celebrity Golf Outing, where we were honored to be a hole sponsor.

Chaired by the Honorable Mayor Coleman and Buckeye legend Archie Griffin, the event raised critical funds to expand mental health resources in our community.

We’re proud to stand alongside partners who believe in the power of access, care, and hope.

At Maryhaven, we know recovery and healing don’t happen alone - it takes a community. That’s why we are so grateful to our partners at Sauce Boss for standing with us in our mission.

Sauce Boss Owner and CEO - Nicole - created two all-natural, vegan salsas that not only bring incredible flavor, but also directly support Maryhaven’s life-changing programs for individuals and families in need. Every jar sold fuels hope, healing, and second chances.

We could not do this work without partners like Sauce Boss, and we are proud to be part of a community that shows up for one another in such meaningful ways.

📅 Official Launch: September 26

Join us as we turn flavor into hope - and prove that community partnerships can change lives.

New data shows nearly 1 in 10 U.S. adults used opioids in the past year, with fentanyl driving much of the rise.

In a recent article from Open Minds, Monica E. Oss shared that these numbers are more than statistics - they represent lives, families, and communities deeply affected by the ongoing opioid epidemic.

The toll is staggering: treating opioid use disorder costs the healthcare system an estimated $695,000 per person. Beyond the dollars, the true cost is measured in lives lost and families broken.

At Maryhaven, we see this reality every day - and we are part of the solution. Through prevention, education, treatment, and recovery support, we help people navigate the challenges of substance use and rebuild their lives.

From 24/7 detox and mobile crisis response, to residential treatment and community-based care, we are here to restore hope when it’s needed most.

The fight against opioids is far from over, but with compassionate care and community support, change is possible.

Friday at Maryhaven, we came together with our clients to honor Overdose Awareness Day.

Thanks to the generous support of the ADAMH Board of Franklin County, we shared a day filled with connection, reflection, and hope - complete with Pitabilities food truck, a DJ, Kona Ice, and, most importantly, the powerful testimonies of our residents.

By sharing their stories of strength, healing, and recovery, our community reminded us that while overdose impacts so many lives, hope and second chances are always possible.

Together, we honor, remember, and continue the work of restoring lives.

Meet Jennifer Gulley, our dedicated Director of Homeless Programs at Maryhaven.

For the past 7 years, Jennifer has led our 24/7 Engagement Center - where people who are intoxicated, high, homeless, or struggling with untreated mental health issues can find safety, care, and a path forward.

Thanks to support from ADAMH Board of Franklin County and the Community Shelter Board, this life-saving program is able to operate around the clock.

Jennifer shares: “I am so grateful a place like this even exists. My dad was an alcoholic and spent a lot of weekends in jail - and there was not a place like this. I feel very grateful for this.”

Her personal story fuels her passion to make a difference and to provide the help her father once needed.

There’s no such thing as a “normal day” in her work, but every day she brings hope, compassion, and the chance for change.

Maryhaven recently participated in the first-ever Franklin County Behavioral Health Leadership Academy - a new, six-month peer learning cohort organized by the ADAMH Board of Franklin County and Mental Health America of Ohio.

Our team joined 16 other leaders representing 12 agencies in central Ohio, all working to sharpen skills in team building, effective supervision, and creating caring, high-retention workplace cultures.

Middle managers are often the unsung heroes of mental health care - shaping organizational culture and directly impacting staff satisfaction and client outcomes.

By supporting these leaders across the ADAMH provider network, including Maryhaven, we’re strengthening the local behavioral health workforce that serves Columbus residents every day.

Investing in leadership means investing in people. When supervisors feel equipped and valued, frontline staff stay longer, build stronger relationships, and deliver better, more consistent care to community members in recovery.

At Maryhaven, our promise is rooted in people - not just policy. We are proudly growing stronger, together, so our community always has the support and stability it needs.
