Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is another important form of AAC that helps many children communicate their wants, needs, and feelings. With PECS, kids can exchange pictures to express themselves , giving them a real voice, even if words are hard right now.

What’s important for parents to remember is that PECS isn’t “less than” verbal speech, it’s a powerful tool for communication.

For some children, PECS may lead to spoken words. For others, it may remain their primary way of expressing themselves. Both are valid, and both are beautiful!

The goal is connection and understanding, not forcing speech before a child is ready.

Every child deserves to be heard, whether through words, pictures, signs, or devices. All communication counts!

Did you know that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can potentially help your child's verbal speech?

Using forms of communication like sign language, picture boards, or devices with your kiddo can help them visualize language and help them build strong communication and expression.

When adults use AAC with their kiddo, it takes the pressure off the child and allows them to communicate in the way that feels comfortable right now. For some kiddos, this support helps them with their verbal speech. For others, AAC remains their primary voice. Both are wonderful and valid ways to communicate!

Handwriting starts long before kids ever pick up a pencil! Fun, hands-on activities can strengthen the muscles and coordination needed for writing success.

Try having your kiddo draw in shaving cream or sand to make letter practice sensory and exciting. Use sidewalk chalk for big arm movements to help build writing muscles.
Or even play “connect the dots” to boost hand-eye coordination and visual motor skills.

Making pre-writing practice playful keeps kids engaged and confident as they build the foundation for great handwriting!

Meet Hannah White, one of our amazing Speech Therapists!

Hannah is a proud Buckeye, earning both her B.A. in Speech and Hearing Sciences (with a minor in ASL) and her M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from The Ohio State University. She brings valuable experience in evaluating and treating children with articulation, expressive/receptive language, swallowing, and pragmatic disorders.

When she's not working, you’ll find Hannah enjoying time with family and friends, exploring new places, taking daily walks, and cheering on the Buckeyes!

Meet Olivia Ryncarz, one of our passionate and dedicated occupational therapist here at Blossom! She earned her B.S. from the University of Dayton and her Master’s in OT from Walsh University.

Olivia has experience working with children in both public and specialized school settings, supporting fine motor development, emotional regulation, and sensory processing. She also brings unique experience from the mental health field, having helped launch an OT program at a domestic violence shelter.

At Blossom, Olivia is excited to help kids build confidence and everyday life skills through fun, meaningful therapy. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, testing new recipes, and exploring her new home in Columbus!
