“So what is an audiologist?"

I am asked this question quite frequently.

Here's a little secret, believe it or not, we do a lot more than just deal with hearing aids and ask you to press the button when you hear the beep.

The beauty of audiology is that it is constantly evolving, and there is SO much variety in our field that not many people know about.

Audiologists are THE premiere hearing and balance healthcare specialists!

We are the primary healthcare professionals who: evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage hearing loss, tinnitus, auditory processing disorders and ear-related balance disorders in individuals of all ages.

Like other healthcare professions, there are various specialties that an audiologist can chose if they so desire.

Being a mobile audiologist creates a lot of variety in my professional life. There is never a dull moment. In one clinic day, I could see a few toddlers and school-age kids in the morning for hearing tests, remove cerumen "ear wax" from patients' ears and end the day fitting a 100-year-old with hearing aids in the afternoon.

When Allyson Felix became pregnant, Nike was prepared to cut the terms of Felix's endorsement by as much as 70% due to the pregnancy, and told her to “know your place and just run.” 🤯

Amid all of this, she was forced to have an emergency c-section seven months into her pregnancy because of a potentially life-threatening condition and her baby had to live for more than a month in the NICU. But two years later she’s qualified for her fifth Olympics with her daughter watching.

Felix dropped Nike and created her own brand of running shoes, the Saysh One. She is currently running in the Olympics in Japan wearing them under the banner “I Know My Place”. 😏

With 11 medals now, she passed Carl Lewis this summer for the most track and field medals by an American in history!

How often should students have their hearing screened AT SCHOOL? 🤔

It’s more than you would think! There are many late-onset hearing losses that occur after birth. This is why it’s so important to have your child’s hearing screened consistently. Usually, this will be done in school. See post for more details!

Here’s why your baby should get a newborn hearing screening 👉👉👉 👂🎧✨

All in all, the newborn hearing screening is the only way to know if your newborn is hearing correctly- if they refer, they will need further testing for a diagnosis if hearing loss is found. It is also one of the earliest ways to ensure your baby will develop communication and language skills (assuming they have no other developmental delays). If your baby refers and is diagnosed with hearing loss, the early the better so they are offered early intervention services and/or medical intervention as not all hearing loss is permanent.

Additionally, the newborn hearing screening is required in hospitals, meaning the only group not always receiving this screening is homebirth babies, so if your baby was born at home, make sure to schedule their newborn hearing screening as soon as possible. 🎧

Why The NBHS Matters 👂🤍✨
Newborn Hearing Screening (NBHS)
The newborn hearing screening uses advanced technology such as the OAE or AABR to screen a baby’s hearing while they are asleep. The screening is completed by a licensed audiologist. The hearing screening will determine if a baby needs a diagnostic hearing test. All babies should be screened within 1 month of age, however, if your baby has not had the screening, it can be done at any age.
