Evan Matheney, MA, LPCC
Evan graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors in Political Science, during which time he worked at the statehouse for the Assistant Majority Whip and the Speaker of the House. Afterwards he received a full scholarship to law school, where he started his studies and became a Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian Ad Litem (CASA/GAL) in Lucas County, Ohio. There, he was hired to train and mentor new CASA/GALs and to help foster youth prepare to age out of the foster care system. This work as the court’s Emancipation Specialist led Evan to become the founder and executive director of Dream Again Ohio (DAO), a non-profit, which provided housing and training to youth aging out of the foster care system. DAO later donated their assets and funding to a larger non-profit organization to help multiply their impact in the community. This work helped Evan realize that he wanted to work in depth with children and families. He left law school to pursue his master's degree in Clinical Counseling (MACC) and graduated from Winebrenner Theological Seminary with his MACC.
Evan began his counseling career at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) on the Home Based Team which specializes in community-based Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). PCIT, designed for children who demonstrate disruptive behaviors, helps the parents and families of these children regain control of their home and lives by increasing attachment and use of positive (-read powerful and effective-) parenting skills. From there, Evan moved to the Early Childhood Mental Health Team to learn Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), a trauma processing therapy for children. Evan is also trained as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) and in Motivational Interviewing (MI). In addition, he has experience with a variety of therapies including Existential, Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Exposure and Response, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
Evan knows that asking for help and receiving counseling is intimidating, and that being a parent can be lonely and frustrating. That's why he believes that people and their relationships are of the utmost importance. Research shows that the relationship is the most important factor in change, so he deeply values the relationship he develops with his clients and their families.
Evan is engaged to the love of his life, Kaitlyn, and lives at home with their 3 fur-children, Charlie, Tigger, and Rabbit.
