So, what "counts" as a word? It might be surprising that there are many different types of words that can be counted when figuring out how many words your little one knows.

Exclamatory words: short, powerful words used to communicate, especially during play

Animal sounds: give any and all animals a sound and/or an action that your little one can learn and eventually imitate

Word approximations: these are "partial words" or simplified versions of words that children produce while learning correct speech production

Words in ANY language: including sign language and signs your child has made up that are used independently, intentionally, and consistently

As long as the word (or sign) is used independently (not in imitation), intentionally (to communicate with another person), and consistently, it can count as a word!

If you want support increasing your child's expressive language, let's connect and make it happen 🌱

First off, what do we mean by exclamatory words?

These are words like:
Wee!
Woah!
Wow!
Uh oh!
Oh no!
Boom!
Yay!
Uhhh! (when holding something heavy)

These words are short, yet mighty. Exclamatory words:

🌱 contain mostly vowels, which are typically easier to imitate and produce

🌱 are short, thus making them easier to imitate than a longer word with more syllables and sounds

🌱 are fun and exciting and often keep the child's attention and engagement

🌱 easily allow for vowel prolongation and really stretching out the word to increase your child's attention and likelihood of imitation

During every single one of my private sessions today I coached families on using exclamatory words during play and interactions with their toddler. All of them tried it in the session and were amazed by how much more attentive and engaged their child was! The 💡 went off for many of these parents, which was so exciting!

Give these words a try during play with your child or, if you need support, contact me at olivia@littlesproutsspeech.com and we can work on it together!

Speech therapy is right for you and your toddler if...

🌱 He or she has been diagnosed with a speech, language, and/or communication delay or disorder

🌱 He or she is not yet meeting expected communication milestones

🌱 You, as the parent, have concerns regarding your child's communication

🌱 You have concerns and these concerns have not been validated and honored by your child's care team and you feel stuck and are wanting support

🌱 Your child receives government-funded services but these services are unsatisfactory for whatever reason (too infrequent, ineffective, not in the home, not a good "fit" with the therapist, and so on)

🌱 Your child is on a waitlist for therapy and you want to be proactive and get started seeing progress in your child

🌱 Your child is developing typically, but you would like to learn additional strategies to support and maximize your child's skills and overall language development

Hi, I'm Olivia!

I am a licensed pediatric speech-language pathologist in Columbus, Ohio. I obtained my Masters Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. After getting my degree I headed back home to Ohio where I currently live and practice. 🏡
