So, what "counts" as a word? It might be surprising that there are many different types of words that can be counted when figuring out how many words your little one knows.
Exclamatory words: short, powerful words used to communicate, especially during play
Animal sounds: give any and all animals a sound and/or an action that your little one can learn and eventually imitate
Word approximations: these are "partial words" or simplified versions of words that children produce while learning correct speech production
Words in ANY language: including sign language and signs your child has made up that are used independently, intentionally, and consistently
As long as the word (or sign) is used independently (not in imitation), intentionally (to communicate with another person), and consistently, it can count as a word!
If you want support increasing your child's expressive language, let's connect and make it happen 🌱
