Exercise. Glucose. Cortisol.
Quick glucose lesson: average fasting sugar is best 70-100 (lower is better)
-it goes up after eating. Less than 140 is the goal for a non diabetic at two hours after you start your meal (example dinner starts at 5…at 7 your sugar should be less than 140). Even better to have no spikes in sugar!!
- low carb/sugar meals are less likely to spike sugars
-when you eat and the order you eat your food all matters when it comes to sugar spikes (more posts to come)
-exercise can make sugar go up or down
-usually the long endurance exercise will drop sugars in 60-90 minutes
-high intensity can make sugar go up
-added twist!!
Cortisol goes up with intense exercise (down with yoga type exercise)
-Cortisol also increases your sugar
-Cortisol is highest in the morning and should be at its peak 30 minutes after waking
-so my huge spike today was a tempo run about 30 minutes after waking…perfect storm to give me high sugar!
-high Cortisol isn’t always bad …if we see a bear we need high cortisol and high sugar for energy to run away …but long term stress can mean high cortisol that doesn’t go down which can the mean higher sugars that can cause diabetes, weight gain, anxiety
