Our History

The Black Ambassadors Mental Health Planning Group (BAMHPG) was developed in January 2019 with the support of Dr. Kevin Dixon, Vice President of Community Engagement at Franklin County ADAMH. Twelve Black professionals, advocates, and community ambassadors were selected and invited to a work session to discuss the mental health challenges specific to our reality as Blacks in these roles. Participants shared details of personal experiences including struggles with mental health as well as trends they have observed in others of similar background in their personal and professional lives. The session concluded with a focus on ideas for the development of solutions to address the unique needs of this specific population.

Following the initial group meeting, the BAMHPG, a core group of the original members, proceeded with weekly work sessions throughout 2019 to determine goals, define a target population, and identify needed services. Facilitation of focus groups and review of related research and data along with BAMHPG members’ lived experiences highlighted not only a gap in the services offered in Franklin County, but that members of our target population often do not use the services and resources available and/or find them harmful or unhelpful.

Our findings led us to a mission to realize a holistically healthy Black community in Franklin County through an investment in the mental health and well-being of those focused on serving the Black community in our county. The Group (which includes a MHAFC staff member) forged a partnership with Mental Health America of Franklin County to effectively reach its’ goals with an intent to leverage their support during the early stages of the work while making continued efforts to gather data and identify and clarify the needs of the target population and best practices to serve them. Ultimately, our hope is to create a model that can be duplicated throughout the country and replicated for use with other populations.
