On April 1st, 2015 Elijah Seguin, age 3, was diagnosed with Generalized Epilepsy and was hospitalized at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City for nearly two weeks. With no previous episodes or family history, the doctors cannot give them any answers as the MRI and spinal tap have failed to show the cause. Presently, Eli is on the Ketogenic Diet. This
is a high fat, low carb diet that helps control seizures in some people when medications have failed. Prescribed by his Neurologist and carefully monitored by a Dietitian, the Keto Diet Plan is very difficult to follow as it requires precise measurements of calories, fluids, and proteins. After having tried 3 medications, Eli’s condition was severely worsening with over 100 seizures a day. Statistics have shown that if the first 2 anti-epileptic medications fail to control seizures, the 3rd only has a 12% chance of working, the 4th only 5%. We are running out of options and the negative side-effects from the medications could cause Elijah to have liver failure, eye damage and blood disorders. None of which seem like an acceptable alternative especially since many of the medications have not been studied in young patients. The Seguin's have been transferred to Utah by the Military as dad is on active duty. They have no family nearby and are dealing with this without the close support of loved ones.
