It's not always a good idea
to tell your family (especially parents!) when labor starts.

The texts and calls will start causing anxiety for both you and your partner. The need to update everyone will have your partner on their phone rather than focusing on you.

Labor, especially early labor is time to feel calm and peaceful. Not pressured to provide updates and certainly not pressured to do what feels right for your family.

Often times you'll get advice and suggestions that don't align with your plan or desires. This advice can create doubt or fear which in turn causes tension. Tension makes labor more painful.

Will you tell your family when labor starts? When you head to the hospital?

Have you had this conversation with your partner?

I suggest to my clients sometimes (depending on the family dynamic) maybe just FaceTime your parents with a baby like "look what we did!"

This is something to talk about and decide ahead of time so you're both on the same page on notifications. Might as well talk and plan for visitors/no visitors also.

I love a good facial mist! So refreshing anytime but during birth or immediate postpartum? YES PLEASE!

We all have our usual lists for our hospital bags: nursing bras, hair ties, chapstick, etc.

But add this to your list!!

Especially post epidural nap when it's time to freshen up. ✨

I use this daily but never thought about using it in labor. Thanks for the idea .palma!

"The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) asserts that continuous labor support is critical to achieving the best birth outcomes."

AWHONN's guidelines on continuous labor support was recently updated.

I love everything about this position statement, especially the section regarding doulas.

There's value in doulas in the labor room including the OR for cesareans.
