I’ve read this book so many times. It seems like I’ve picked it up every year since I started as a doula 6 years ago.

This book is full of solutions for the care that’s received in hospitals during childbirth.

It’s a real look at evidence based care for birth and we can take control of our own birth stories.

It’s also available in audio book. If you are expecting I highly recommend reading or listening to it.

You CAN go home!!

You labor at home so long you surely think when you get to the hospital you have reached active labor….only to find out you are only 2-3 cm dilated. This is still early labor.

📣 GO HOME!!!

If you stay, you will be pressured to progress by the means of augmentation. They will start talking about starting Pitocin or artificially breaking your water.

👏🏼 This is an elective induction!

With augmentation you are forcing labor to progress quicker than it was intended to, which can have poor outcomes.

Just because you’ve gone to the hospital doesn’t mean you can’t go back home where you feel safe and comfortable and can continue to labor until things get more intense.

Learn more about the risks of elective inductions in my Lamaze class.

Next class is June 21st (online)

Newborn hats have been used immediately after birth since the 1970’s claiming that they helped regulate baby’s temperature. It was believed that we lose most of our heat from our heads. This myth was debunked in a study which was published in the British Medical Journal in 2008.

Instead of hatting babies after birth, have lots of skin to skin contact. We know that one of the many benefits of skin to skin is oxytocin release- which causes the skin’s temperature of the mother’s breast to rise, providing warmth to the baby.

Studies also show that the scent of the baby’s head is extremely important to Mom during skin to skin.

It creates a lot of that good oxytocin to release from Mom as she is kissing and cuddling her baby close to her.

This good oxytocin causes uterine contractions to prevent hemorrhage and increases the chances of successful breastfeeding.

Why cover all that goodness up with a hat?

Talk to your provider about no newborn hats on your baby immediately after birth and consider adding it to your birth plan!

If you don’t know about Raffi you are
missing out!
My parents played this record (yes record!) all the time when I was a kid and I still sing these songs all the time! My sister found the playlist on YouTube! You should check it out if you have little ones.
Such great memories and he’s a GREAT musician! I looked him up and apparently he’s still alive and touring at 76! He also does a lot of advocacy work for environmental and social causes.
