Welcoming our newest team member, Gina!

Gina discovered her passion for breastfeeding during her WIC rotation of her dietetic internship. After learning about the biological advantages of breastfeeding for both the parent and baby, and seeing the unique bond it created, she knew she wanted to pursue the infant feeding world further. After obtaining her Registered Dietitian License in 2020, she began working at Franklin County WIC as a Health Professional. Here she was able to work with a diverse group of parents to expand her knowledge and counsel on a wide range of infant feeding topics, including starting solids and baby-led weaning. Working with the breastfeeding team continued to fuel her interest and she became a certified lactation specialist (CLS) in 2022.

Gina has since moved on to be the Director and Breastfeeding Coordinator for the Madison County WIC Program. In this role, she provides one-on-one support for parents, tailoring education to their unique feeding goals and ensuring everyone receives the care and attention they deserve. Her growing passion led her to obtain her IBCLC in 2024.

Gina will be serving Franklin and Madison Counties with in-home lactation consultations. We are so excited to have Gina on the team!

Babywearing can promote attachment and bonding, but did you know it can help improve breastfeeding outcomes as well?

A study by Little et al. (2021) found that infant carriers increased rates of breastfeeding and feeding of expressed human milk at 6 months postpartum, suggesting that babywearing may increase breastfeeding duration.

Additional benefits related to breastfeeding include:

1) MILK PRODUCTION – skin to skin contact increases levels of oxytocin & prolactin – hormones that are important for establishing and maintaining milk supply.

2) RESPONSIVE FEEDING – by carrying and keeping baby close, you may be more likely to respond to early feeding cues & avoid delaying feeds.

3) REFLUX – helps reduce reflux by providing stability on tummy while keeping baby in an upright position .

If you plan to breastfeed, it’s best to start preparing during pregnancy. Taking the time to prepare prior to birth will help you feel more confident and ensure you have the support readily available. Knowing ahead of time what steps to take directly after birth to initiate breastfeeding can help improve duration outcomes and supply.

Check out the link in our bio to schedule an appointment, sign up for our free prenatal breastfeeding class (virtual - 1st Saturday of every month), and have access to other free resources such as our postpartum planner and parent workshops.

Sleep (or lack thereof) is a component of postpartum that many new parents struggle with. However, frequent feedings - even those that occur in the middle of the night - are biologically normal. While it may be tempting to drop or limit nighttime feeds, there are some important factors to consider, as doing this too soon may impact your milk supply and your infant’s growth and development.

Just because it’s normal doesn’t minimize the impact it may have on the new parents. Adapting your environment, nighttime routines, sleeping arrangements, and/or feeding positions can help make nighttime feedings smoother. Consider reaching out to a local lactation consultant to address concerns and discuss individualized strategies to help make nighttime feedings more manageable.
